Returning to Work From PFML
Continuous Leaves of Absence
Employees must be cleared by BU Occupational Health before their scheduled return for all continuous personal medical leaves excluding childbirth. Employees should ask their health care provider to send a release to return to work form completed by their medical provider to BU Occupational Health no later than 14 days before their scheduled return. They can contact BU Occupational Health Center at buohc@bu.edu or 617-353-6630 to start the return process.
Employees are not authorized to return to the workplace until BU Occupational Health has reviewed the documentation and cleared the employee for duty.
When clearance is issued, the manager will be notified and must email leaves@bu.edu and bostonuniversity@sedgwick.com to confirm the employee’s clearance and actual return date.
Continuous leaves for personal medical leave for childbirth, family leave, or bonding leave do not require Occupational Health clearance. The manager should email leaves@bu.edu and bostonuniversity@sedgwick.com to confirm the date the employee actually returns.
If you or your supervisor do not notify Sedgwick or the Boston University Leaves team that you have returned to work, you will be placed on an “unpaid leave” beginning the date after your approved leave ends until confirmation is received that you have returned to work or that your leave may have been extended. Please contact Sedgwick to request an extension to your leave if you are unable to return to work on the date your leave is scheduled to end.
Intermittent/Reduced Schedule Leaves of Absence
When an employee resumes full-time work after an intermittent or reduced-schedule leave, the department must submit a Return from LOA form to update the employee’s return effective the date they resumed full-time work.
