How to Access Benefits

  • All leave benefits are administered by Sedgwick.
  • If you expect to be absent for a week or more and have a need for family or personal medical leave, you are expected to notify your supervisor as early as possible, but at least one hour before the start of your workday, except in cases of extreme emergency.
  • Contact Sedgwick online through your mySedgwick portal or by phone to initiate the process:
  • Contact Sedgwick immediately upon an unplanned leave, or up to 60 days before a planned leave
  • Sedgwick will work with you and/or your doctor to verify your claim eligibility and administer your leave and return to work.
  • Leave benefits are paid through BU payroll according to your direct deposit election on file.
  • For non-Massachusetts residents only: If you do not work in the state of Massachusetts, your work state may offer a Paid Family and Leave Benefit. Please check with your work state for the availability of such benefits.
    • If your state of residence offers a Paid Family and Medical leave benefit, you must apply for benefits through both Sedgwick as well as your state of residence.  Sedgwick will assume you are receiving the benefit through your state of residence and offset the benefit available through Boston University unless you demonstrate a denial of benefits from your state of residence in writing.
