[BU Today] SHA Students Explore Global Tourism and Cultural Exchange in Kenya
Four students from the Boston University School of Hospitality Administration recently traveled to Kenya as part of a service-learning program designed to immerse students in global hospitality, tourism, sustainability, and cultural exchange. Through partnerships with local organizations and educational institutions, students gained firsthand experience with hospitality operations while engaging with communities across the country.
During the 10-day experience, students visited hospitality organizations including the Villa Rosa Kempinski Nairobi and Brackenhurst Conference and Retreat Centre, explored sustainable tourism practices, and participated in cultural exchanges ranging from local home visits to community service projects. They also engaged with students at the Kimlea Girls Technical Training Centre, where young women receive hospitality and tourism training designed to expand career opportunities.
For participants, the most impactful lessons came through human connection. Students reflected on the warmth and generosity they encountered throughout Kenya and gained a deeper appreciation for the cultural competency required in a global hospitality industry. As graduate student Baiden Wright noted, “Hospitality really does stem from human connection.”
The program reflects BU SHA’s commitment to experiential learning and responsible tourism, helping students develop global perspectives while exploring how hospitality can foster meaningful cross-cultural understanding.
