Latest Research Reveals How Task–AI Fit Influences Job Crafting and Performance in Hotels
A newly published study in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management by Lan Lu, Ed.D., and Richard Currie, Ph.D., sheds light on how artificial intelligence (AI) influences hotel employees’ behavior and performance. Drawing on data from an experience-sampling field study of employees in 13 luxury hotels in Orlando, Florida, the research reveals that task–AI fit plays a dual role, encouraging proactive job crafting while simultaneously triggering self-esteem threats.
The findings show that when employees perceive a strong fit between their tasks and AI tools, they are more likely to engage in job crafting, which in turn enhances task performance. Importantly, the study highlights the role of leadership: leaders who actively model effective AI use can strengthen employees’ job crafting behaviors, though reducing self-esteem threats may require broader organizational support.
This research advances understanding of human–AI collaboration in hospitality and offers practical insights for managers seeking to integrate AI in ways that boost performance while supporting employee well-being.
