It’s National Scholarship Month! Here Are Some Tips for Finding Scholarships That Are Right for You.

By: Jack Beck (CAS ’21, SHA minor)

It’s no secret that college is expensive, but scholarships can do a lot to ease the financial burden on students and their families. November is National Scholarship Month, and we want to take the opportunity to provide you with some of the best resources for finding scholarships and other opportunities to help with reducing the stress of tuition.

For students who will be starting their first year at BU in the fall of 2021, you can find info on merit scholarship applications on the BU webpage. These scholarships range from the Trustee Scholarship, which covers full tuition and fees, to others such as the National Merit Scholarship or the National Hispanic Recognition Program Award, which cover $25,000 of tuition. And be sure to look into affordableBU, BU’s commitment to meet 100% of a student’s calculated financial need through grants, work-study, loans, and scholarships.

For students currently enrolled, The Office of Fellowships & Scholarships webpage has everything you need. There, you can find opportunities for both undergrad and grad students, with up-to-date information on deadlines, specific fields of study, and more. There are also guides on how to best handle personal statements and letters of recommendation, and the Provost Office offers to review any scholarship applications before a student submits them.

Resources outside of BU can also be tremendously helpful when searching for other scholarships to apply to. CareerOneStop, CollegeBoard, and FastWeb all offer great resources that can help you find an application catering to your specific field of study. NEWH offers scholarships exclusively for hospitality students, and many more similar industry-specific opportunities can be found here.
