He is the author of many articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, review essays, and several books, including\u00a0<\/span><em>Into Slavery: Racial Decisions in the Virginia Colony<\/em><span>\u00a0(1977),\u00a0<\/span><em>Sambo: The Rise &amp; Demise of an American Jester<\/em><span>\u00a0(1986), and\u00a0<\/span><em>Rebellious Laughter: People\u2019s Humor in American Culture<\/em><span>\u00a0(1997). Among his edited works are\u00a0<\/span><em>Seasons of Rebellion: Protest and Radicalism in Recent America<\/em><span>, co-author with Robert A. Rosenstone (1972),\u00a0<\/span><em>Urban Racial Violence in the Twentieth Century<\/em><span>\u00a0(1976), and\u00a0<\/span><em>The Humor Prism in Twentieth Century America<\/em><span>\u00a0(1997). He is on the editorial board of the\u00a0<\/span><em>International Journal of Humor<\/em><span>\u00a0published by Mouton de Gruyter.
