{"id":7558,"date":"2015-07-28T15:15:50","date_gmt":"2015-07-28T19:15:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=7558"},"modified":"2025-11-24T17:53:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T22:53:30","slug":"mayank-varia","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/mayank-varia\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayank Varia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/profiles\/mayank-varia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mayank Varia<\/a><span> is Associate Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences<\/a>, Co-Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/riscs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Reliable Information Systems and Cyber Security (RISCS)<\/a>, and a founding member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/centers-initiatives-labs\/cyber-alliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cyber Security, Law, and Society Alliance (Cyber Alliance)<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>Varia also served on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Advisory Committee on Data for Evidence Building <\/a>and chairs the legal subtask group of the <a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/bigdata\/task-teams\/privacy\/index.cshtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Nations Privacy Preserving Techniques Task Team<\/a> to promote the use of cryptographically protected data analysis and shape the laws and policies surrounding its use.<\/p>\n<p><span>Varia&#8217;s research focuses on theoretical and applied cryptography, and its applications throughout and beyond computing &amp; data sciences. His research interests include: data analysis for social good, the s<\/span>ocial and legal impact of cryptography, secure computing and search, formal analysis of systems, program obfuscation, and privacy and inference. He explores the computational and social aspects of cryptography, and his work has been featured in media outlets like CNET, The Hill, and ZDNet.
