{"id":22777,"date":"2021-03-05T11:56:03","date_gmt":"2021-03-05T15:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=22777"},"modified":"2026-08-12T21:51:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T01:51:08","slug":"ioannis-paschalidis","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/ioannis-paschalidis\/","title":{"rendered":"Ioannis (Yannis) Paschalidis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yannis Paschalidis is a Distinguished Professor in the College of Engineering at Boston University with joint appointments in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of\u00a0Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Division of Systems Engineering<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Biomedical Engineering<\/a>. He is also a Founding Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/\">Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences <\/a>and a Professor of Biostatistics in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/ioannis-paschalidis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Public Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He is the Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science &amp; Engineering , <\/a><span>the University&#8217;s largest interdisciplinary research hub, which fosters multidisciplinary research in computing, artificial intelligence, and data science across all BU schools and colleges. Previously, he served as Director of Boston University&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"mw:ExtLink nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/\" class=\"external text\" id=\"mwCw\">Center for Information &amp; Systems Engineering (CISE)<\/a><span>\u2014an interdisciplinary research center that focuses on the study and design of intelligent systems\u2014from 2014 to 2022, following nearly a decade as its co-director from 2004 to 2013. <\/span>He remains affiliated with\u00a0 CISE and is also affiliated with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bmerc\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BioMolecular Engineering Research Center (BMERC)<\/a><em>, <\/em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ctsi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clinical &amp; Translational Science Institute (CTSI)<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/precision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Precision Diagnostics Center (PDC)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Initiative on Cities<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/csn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Systems Neuroscience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>Paschalidis is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association. His honors include the Boston University College of Engineering\u2019s Charles DeLisi Award for outstanding research, an NSF CAREER Award, and BU\u2019s Department of Medicine Outstanding Research Collaborator Award. He also served as founding editor-in-chief of <\/span><em><span>IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems.<\/span><\/em><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>He completed his graduate education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) receiving an MS (1993) and a PhD (1996) degree, both in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In September 1996 he joined Boston University where he has been ever since. He has held visiting appointments with MIT and Columbia University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Interests:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Systems and control, networking, data science, optimization, applied probability, operations research, computational biology, medical informatics, and bioinformatics.
