{"id":16810,"date":"2019-06-28T14:29:58","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T18:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=16810"},"modified":"2020-02-07T15:22:16","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T20:22:16","slug":"raja-sambasivan","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/raja-sambasivan\/","title":{"rendered":"Raja Sambasivan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research Scientist, Red Hat Collaboratory<\/p>\n<p>Raja Sambasivan is a research scientist at Boston University (BU).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0His<\/span>\u00a0research focuses on building the easily upgradeable or evolvable, multi-party distributed systems needed to support innovation in the cloud ecosystem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>A core part of his research involves creating sophisticated diagnosis tools for these systems since the extreme difficulty of diagnosing new problems is a significant barrier to change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>At BU, he leads the\u00a0Diagnosis and Control of Clouds Lab (DOCC Lab) and the Mass Open Cloud\u00a0(MOC) project.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>From 2013 to 2016, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the CS Department at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>He worked on the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.cmu.edu\/~xia\/\">XIA<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>project and was advised by Professor<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.cmu.edu\/~prs\/\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>Peter Steenkiste<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>His research focused on creating mechanisms for upgrading inter-domain routing on the Internet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajasambasivan.com\/pubs\/bootstrapping-evolvability-for-inter-domain-routing-with-d-bgp\/\">SIGCOMM\u201917<\/a>).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>In the Fall of 2013, he co-developed and co-taught the initial offering of CMU\u2019s graduate class on cloud computing (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.cmu.edu\/~15719\">15-719<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>He completed his Ph.D. in the ECE Department at CMU in May 2013. He worked at the\u00a0Parallel Data Lab (PDL)\u00a0and was advised by Professor<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ece.cmu.edu\/~ganger\">Greg Ganger<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>His dissertation focused on creating tools to\u00a0reduce the difficulty of diagnosing problems in distributed systems (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajasambasivan.com\/pubs\/diagnosing-performance-changes-by-comparing-request-flows\/\">NSDI\u201911<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajasambasivan.com\/pubs\/visualizing-request-flow-comparison-to-aid-performance-diagnosis-in-distributed-systems\/\">InfoVis\u201913<\/a>,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajasambasivan.com\/pubs\/principled-workflow-centric-tracing-of-distributed-system\/\">SoCC\u201916<\/a>).<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0His<\/span>\u00a0research on creating workflow-centric tracing infrastructures and diagnosis tools that use the resulting traces has been cited over 200 times. \u00a0It has also influenced industrial tracing efforts\u2014examples include Jaeger\u2019s trace-comparison visualizations and Uber\u2019s recent efforts to create many-to-many-trace-comparison tools.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2007, he appeared in a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phdcomics.com\/comics\/archive.php?comicid=824\">PhDComics strip<\/a>\u00a0encouraging CS grad students to wear lab coats to work.
