G. Winfield (Win) Treese joined the Hariri Institute as its Associate Director in October 2011, bringing\u00a0a unique mix of talents and experiences, given his work in technical consulting, startups, industrial research, and academia.<\/p>\n
Win\u00a0holds a\u00a0B.S. degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology <\/a>(1986)\u00a0and an S.M. in Computer Science from Harvard University<\/a> (1992). Win\u00a0was Chief Systems Engineer at MIT’s Project Athena<\/a>, which developed many key technologies in modern computer systems, including the Kerberos network security system<\/a>. Later on, he joined the Cambridge Research Laboratory (CRL) of Digital Equipment Corporation <\/a>as a\u00a0member of its research staff, working on several projects, including the design and implementation of Digital’s Internet firewall, and of AudioFile, a distributed system for network audio. In 1994, Win co-founded Open Market<\/a>, one of the earliest companies building\u00a0 software for Internet commerce. As Fellow and Vice President for Technology at\u00a0Open Market, Win was responsible for\u00a0the security architecture\u00a0of Open Market’s line of\u00a0e-business applications.\u00a0\u00a0In 2001, Win co-founded\u00a0Serissa Research, Inc.<\/a> a consulting and research firm specializing in technology strategy and e-commerce application architectures for security and privacy. From 2001 to 2003, Win was a Visiting Scholar at the Edward R. Murrow Center of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. In 2004, Win joined SiCortex<\/a>, a\u00a0 startup company that specialized in building high-performance computer systems. As its Director of Software from 2004 to 2008\u00a0and its Director of Advanced Technology until\u00a02009, Win led the company’s software development and support for of a number of scientific applications. Since then, and prior to joining the Hariri Institute at Boston University in 2011, Win worked as a technology consultant for a number of very\u00a0early-stage startups.<\/p>\n Win\u00a0served as chair of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) Working Group<\/a> of the Internet Engineering Task Force<\/a> (IETF) from its inception through the first published\u00a0 standard for TLS, the Internet standard successor to SSL.\u00a0He also chaired the 8th USENIX Security Symposium<\/a>. Win was the editor of the regular “Putting It Together” column in the NetWorker<\/a> magazine, published by the ACM<\/a>. He co-authored the book “Designing Systems for Internet Commerce<\/a>“,\u00a0 which was widely used in both technical and non-technical courses focusing on\u00a0 doing business on the Internet.
