By focusing on the &#8220;human&#8221; side of the field\u2014from building high-visibility side projects to leveraging mentorship\u2014the program ensures BU graduates enter the market as more than just practitioners. A recent panel featuring both alumni and guest speakers underscored this professional evolution, offering a roadmap for students to transition from capable data scientists to strategic leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn an industry shaken by AI, hearing the mentors&#8217; stories was a total reset: standing out isn\u2019t about coding and stats, but leading with emotional intelligence and impact,\u201d said Ranfei Xu, Program Coordinator for DSMC. \u201cTreat AI as a partner, choose depth over volume, and master the &#8216;why&#8217; behind every decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panel brought together a distinguished group of Boston University alumni and industry guest speakers now leading data science initiatives across diverse sectors, from finance and e-commerce to healthcare and cloud computing, including: <\/span><b>Cl\u00e9mentine Plati,<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machine Learning Engineer, Meta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b>Jennifer Mo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Cloud Solutions Architect, Microsoft; <\/span><b>Kash Balachandran<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Founder, Quant Coaching; <\/span><b>Daniele Micci-Barreca<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Data Science Lead, AI Data, Google; <\/span><b>Haochen Xie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Senior Data Scientist, Amazon; and <\/span><b>Krishna Mohan Akurathi,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Data Science Director, CVS Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panelists emphasized that in the AI era, soft skills\u2014specifically emotional intelligence, communication, and networking\u2014are becoming just as valuable as technical ability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Context is the New Code<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A central theme of the discussion was identifying soft skills as key differentiators between humans and AI. Micci-Barreca emphasized that while AI\u2019s technical capabilities are growing rapidly, it won\u2019t be able to speak to context like a human can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat can be done with the data?\u201d Micci-Barreca encouraged the group to ask themselves. \u201cThe machine isn\u2019t going to ask this question, probably ever. It doesn\u2019t have the context.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sentiment was echoed by Akurathi, who reminded students that human oversight is the difference between a tool and a solution. \u201cYou are still the pilot; if you are not there, it would crash. AI can make good teams better, but it doesn\u2019t fix bad thinking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Building Your Brand in College<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key takeaway for students was the importance of starting early. The panelists encouraged rising data scientists to cultivate critical thinking and soft skills while still in college\u2014identifying side projects and intentional networking as powerful career accelerators. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xie advised students to pursue projects that align with their personal interests and to seek out others in the field who have experience with those projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment40269\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment40269\" style=\"width: 383px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/hic\/files\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-04-at-11.28.21\u202fAM-636x425.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"249\" class=\"wp-image-40269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/files\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-04-at-11.28.21\u202fAM-636x425.png 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/files\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-04-at-11.28.21\u202fAM-1024x685.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/files\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-04-at-11.28.21\u202fAM-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/files\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-04-at-11.28.21\u202fAM.png 1424w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment40269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DSMC provides students with opportunities to build their networking skills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, as AI-driven tools increasingly automate the creation and screening of resumes, Kash Balachandran argued that human connections remain the ultimate differentiator. \u201cYou need a human network and emotional intelligence to nurture relationships,\u201d said Kash. \u201cIt increases interview chances by 60% and helps you break into senior roles that are often not even advertised\u2014AI can\u2019t replace that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panel closed with final remarks about how to differentiate oneself in the current revolution of AI. The panelists urged attendees to get started on their careers as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I interview someone I care about a few things,\u201d said Akurathi. \u201c 1) Can you explain your thinking clearly? 2) Have you done real work (not just courses)? 3) Do you understand the business context? If someone comes through a referral but cannot answer these, the referral really does not help. My advice is to build real projects.
