As AI continues to grow, so does the energy consumption and carbon emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many scientists, researchers, and developers ore often oblivious or fail to recognize the environmental impact of their AI projects. To shed light on how AI impacts the environment, the publication\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PC Mag<\/a><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0published an\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/ai-could-save-the-world-if-it-doesnt-ruin-the-environment-first\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">article<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that features industry expert opinions on the matter, including two of Boston University\u2019s distinguished faculty,\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/kate-saenko\/\" class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kate Saenko<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(Assoc. Professor of Computer Science), and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/ioannis-paschalidis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yannis Paschalidis<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The recent rise in AI\u2019s power consumption is due to the rise of deep learning, a branch of AI algorithms that relies on processing large amounts of data. According to Kate Saenko, Co-Director, Artificial Intelligence Research (<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/centers-initiatives-labs\/air\/\" class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AIR<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">), housed at the\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/\" class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hariri Institute for Computing<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, modern machine learning algorithms use deep neural networks, which are large mathematical models with billions of parameters.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18853\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18853\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/hic\/files\/2019\/11\/Kate-Saenko3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"192\" class=\"wp-image-18853\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kate Saenko<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saenko shares her concern with the Medium as to how deep neural networks require examples to be shown multiple times before its parameters achieve accuracy. All of this computation requires much energy. Even the small deep learning programs consume much energy as compared to other software. Additionally, the cost of computing resources and training neural networks are also a developing concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17278\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17278\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/hic\/files\/2019\/08\/Yannis-Paschalidis.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"202\" class=\"wp-image-17278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/files\/2019\/08\/Yannis-Paschalidis.png 258w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/files\/2019\/08\/Yannis-Paschalidis-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yannis Paschalidis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Paschalidis, a Past Research Fellow at the Hariri Institute, provides a better way to integrate the data centers and energy grid through a \u201cdemand-response\u201d model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #02b9c9;\"><em>\u201cThe idea is to coordinate with the grid to reduce or increase consumption on-demand, depending on electricity supply and demand.
