{"id":13487,"date":"2018-01-12T16:10:11","date_gmt":"2018-01-12T20:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/?p=13487"},"modified":"2018-03-22T16:32:36","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T20:32:36","slug":"bu-professors-showcase-research-ranging-from-software-development-to-big-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/2018\/01\/12\/bu-professors-showcase-research-ranging-from-software-development-to-big-data\/","title":{"rendered":"BU Professors Showcase Research Ranging from Software Development to Big Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/barbara-shinn-cunningham-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barbara Shinn-Cunningham<\/a>, former Hariri Institute\u00a0Steering Committee member and P<span>rofessor of Biomedical Engineering<\/span>, coordinated the <span>\u201cShaping the New Human-Technology Frontier: Current Research at BU\u201d<\/span> event, which brought together<span>\u00a040 professors at the School of Law\u2019s Barristers Hall to foster\u00a0interactions and offering a unique networking opportunity.\u00a0The goal for the event\u00a0was to\u00a0bring people and professors on campus together who may not be inherently\u00a0connected through\u00a0their research areas, but\u00a0could\u00a0potentially reap huge benefits by working together and taking on new, innovative directions for research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Each speaker had four minutes to present his or her\u00a0research topic, with the goal of spiking interest in the crowd so that the attendees could delve into further discussion\u00a0after the event.\u00a0<span>Shinn-Cunningham spoke\u00a0about her research on the hearing technologies, where she detailed that one third of people over 65 have hearing loss. She noted,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cwe are taking knowledge of how we hear in complex settings and using that technology to build new kinds of devices. It is actually a pretty ripe time to rethink the hearing aid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/margrit-betke-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Margrit Betke<\/a>, Hariri\u00a0Institute Fellow, AIR core faculty and professor of Computer Science, presented a series of video demonstrations on the Proficio, a robotic arm.\u00a0<\/span><span>The event transitioned to online and computer technologies with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/sharon-goldberg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sharon Goldberg<\/a>, Institute Fellow and professor of Computer Science, who spoke on why encryption matters. She shared how her lab is combatting the threat attacks by<\/span><span>\u00a0looking at different types of attacks, trying to understand how they can happen in different situations, and how protocols can be designed in order to make these attacks harder for bad actors to carry out.\u00a0<\/span><span>Abby Rudolph, Institute Affiliate and professor in the School of Public Health attended the event to see how this information could address her own research.
