{"id":13348,"date":"2017-12-21T14:40:12","date_gmt":"2017-12-21T19:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/?p=13348"},"modified":"2021-04-21T15:04:57","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T19:04:57","slug":"cyber-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/2017\/12\/21\/cyber-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber Alliance Wraps Up Busy Fall Semester"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/nexusdec17\/\">[Return to Nexus Newsletter]<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>This fall marked the official launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/centers-initiatives-labs\/center-for-reliable-information-systems-and-cyber-security-riscs\/\">BU Cyber Security, Law &amp; Society Alliance<\/a>, led by both Hariri Institute for Computing researchers\u00a0and School of Law professors.\u00a0With eight successful seminars hosted over the semester, the alliance\u00a0continues to grow, bringing together\u00a0computer science researchers, law professors, and social scientists to\u00a0<span>explore the interaction between cybersecurity technology, law, and policy. The past semester&#8217;s talks\u00a0included presentations from BU professors Adam Smith (CS, ECE),\u00a0Michael\u00a0Meurer\u00a0(LAW), and Ran Canetti (CS). Additionally, the seminar series brought in several external speakers, featuring\u00a0Tim Edgar (Brown University),\u00a0Andrew Ferguson (University of the District of Columbia),\u00a0Ellen Goodman (Rutgers),\u00a0Mark McKenna (University of Notre Dame), and\u00a0Woodrow Hartzog (Northeastern University).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With seven events already planned for the spring 2018 semester, and more talks still being scheduled, the group is looking at complex challenges, including concepts such as state sovereignty in cyberspace, governance of the internet, automating legal compliance for data transfer, differential privacy, and how algorithmic recommendations handle racial biases. For a complete list of the spring events, please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/centers-initiatives-labs\/center-for-reliable-information-systems-and-cyber-security-riscs\/\">Cyber Alliance webpage.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>S<\/span><span>pearheaded\u00a0by the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/riscs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Reliable Information Systems &amp; Cyber Security (RISCS)<\/a><span>, t<\/span><span>he alliance aims to leverage BU\u2019s disciplinary breadth to create opportunities for cross-disciplinary debate, research, and activities.\u00a0Since\u00a0the fall of 2016, the alliance has organized\u00a0and sponsored\u00a0a number of successful events.
