Institute Director\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Azer Bestavros<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>and Initiative on Cities<\/a>\u00a0Director\u00a0Katharine Lusk<\/a>\u00a0co-led the National Science Foundation-Sponsored Workshop\u00a0on Effective Community-University-Industry Collaboration Models for Smart and Connected Communities Research<\/a>, as featured in the BU Federal Relations newsletter\u00a0Beltway BUzz<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This two-day workshop<\/span>\u00a0in Washington D.C. featured a series of keynotes and panel discussions that\u00a0delved into successful models and lessons learned in forming and managing community-university-industry\u00a0collaborations. Additionally, participants explored the challenges and barriers to the\u00a0success of such partnerships. After each panel, participants engaged\u00a0in a quick discussion to synthesize takeaways from the panel \u2013 namely barriers, levers, and opportunities\u00a0\u2013 as well as identify other topics and ideas related to the panel discussion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the final stages of the workshop, participants explored the human, financial, and technical resources needed to advance ideas that emerged during workshop discussion. Panelists reflected on\u00a0how this community of multi-disciplinary researchers, city officials, community partners and industry experts<\/span>\u00a0can be enabled to share and copy best practices as well as\u00a0deal with new questions or challenges that continue to emerge\u00a0in areas such as data privacy, communication, transparency, and program delivery.<\/p>\n

The Hariri Institute set the stage for the DC conference by hosting an NSF Visioning Workshop at the Institute during summer 2017. A collaboration with the\u00a0<\/span>Initiative on Cities<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Office of Corporate Relations<\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>Center for Information & Systems Engineering<\/a>\u00a0at Boston University,\u00a0t<\/span>his was the first of two workshops designed\u00a0to\u00a0bring together stakeholders engaged in Smart & Connected Community (S&CC) projects for the purpose of examining successful partnership models, identifying metrics that partners agree are indicative of success, identifying potential or perceived impediments to broader success, and distilling generalizable lessons\/patterns that may be applicable in other settings.<\/span><\/p>\n
