{"id":10567,"date":"2016-12-21T15:38:07","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T19:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/?p=10567"},"modified":"2018-03-22T15:41:31","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T19:41:31","slug":"hariri-hosts-second-annual-massachusetts-open-cloud-moc-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/2016\/12\/21\/hariri-hosts-second-annual-massachusetts-open-cloud-moc-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Hariri Hosts Second Annual Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC) Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On December 6th-7th, the Hariri Institute for Computing hosted\u00a0the second\u00a0annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/research\/cloud-computing\/mass-open-cloud\/\">Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC)<\/a> Workshop.\u00a0Built upon a unique academic, industry, and government partnership, the MOC is comprised of deeply interconnected projects with the same goal: to develop an open, production-quality cloud computing system that enables research and provides leading-edge services for scientific computing.<\/p>\n<p><span>This year&#8217;s two-day workshop built off of a successful event last year and included\u00a0enhanced partner engagement and participation from new attendees.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/info.massopencloud.org\/blog\/2016-moc-fall-workshop\/\">agenda<\/a>\u00a0featured a combination of short micro talks, networking breaks, working groups, a poster session, and a core industry partner roundtable. MOC principal investigator, Orran\u00a0Krieger; Hariri Institute Founding Director, Azer Bestavros; and more than 20 BU faculty, students, postdoctoral researchers, and members of the MOC technical team gave presentations.\u00a0<\/span>The event\u00a0drew more than 140\u00a0participants representing the core industry partners\u00a0(Brocade, Cisco, Intel, Lenovo, Red Hat, and Two Sigma), government partners, faculty, students, and research IT. \u00a0Approximately two-thirds of the workshop attendees were first-time participants, and over 35 of the participants were students.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key MOC government partners, the United States Air Force, was represented by seven attendees. USAF CTO, Tim Rudolph, noted his\u00a0excitement about deepening their existing partnership, pointing to the tremendous value that their work with the MOC has added to USAF research.\u00a0Event\u00a0components built on one another to create intriguing dialogue about the achievements\u00a0and potential development of the MOC. Throughout the workshop, seven successful working groups created\u00a0compelling cases\u00a0to extend the conversation further along specific research thrusts of the MOC.<\/p>\n<p>The MOC is funded by a $3M Commonwealth of Massachusetts MassTech Collaborative Matching Grant Award, and with more than $16M of matching grants from key industry participants.
