The AI and Education Faculty Research Grants support faculty-driven research efforts.The mission is to evolve and advance Boston University’s research in AI and Education, accelerating research for future funding and broader impact. Grant funding include $15,000 to support faculty-led research on AI and Education.
The intersection of AI and Education is broadly defined, and could include, for example:
- Design of AI technology for learners, teachers, schools, education systems
- Issues of equity, accessibility, fairness, accountability, transparency and ethics in AI and education
- Computing and computational literacies or data sciences and data literacies as domains for the development and study of educational theory and practice critical to designing equitable, just and humanizing learning environments across the life span

Program Details
The AI and Education Research Grants offer $15,000 to faculty-led research on AI and Education. In addition to funding, awardees are provided a variety of opportunities to collaborate with other researchers affiliated with the Institute and interact with high profile leaders in computing-enabled and data driven areas through the Institute’s Distinguished Speaker Series. Awardees also have access to request administrative resources such as event planning, communication and grant support from the Hariri Institute’s Administrative Staff.
There may be additional funding available from Digital Learning & Innovation for projects that focus on teaching and learning at BU. Please highlight relevant connections in your application.

Eligibility
Candidates are full time faculty from any college or department at BU who are pursuing research at the intersection of AI and Education.

Applications
- Research Statement (2 pages). The statement should lay out the background and rationale for a research study, and its relevance to the AI and Education Initiative. It should also offer an explanation of research design (methods, procedure, analysis plan, etc.), figures, and other important aspects of the project.
- Budget justification (1 page). List of the expenses funds would be used for, and how the expenses would support the research.
- Example expenses could include, but are not limited to: conference travel, research equipment, professional development, participant/school incentives, research assistants, etc. This award cannot be used for tuition.
- Research Team (max 300 words). Describe the capacity of the research team to pursue research activities, noting contributions and accomplishments.
