Breaking Barriers: DataHub Launches to Advance AI-Driven and Convergent Health Research
The Center for Health Data Science debuts initiative to help cross-disciplinary researchers more easily find, connect, and analyze complex health datasets

While the health sector is generating unprecedented volumes of digital data, fragmented systems, regulatory complexity, and technical barriers often make it difficult for researchers to efficiently discover, access, and connect data across disciplines.
To help researchers navigate those obstacles, Boston University’s Center for Health Data Science (CHDS) today launched DataHub, a new initiative for discovering and working with health data.
DataHub functions as both a gateway and a guide. By bridging CHDS’s deep data inventories with governance expertise, the platform enables researchers to access high-value datasets more efficiently while maintaining appropriate compliance and oversight. DataHub also provides infrastructure that supports AI-enabled research by helping ensure that underlying datasets are curated, traceable, and organized to support interoperability across systems and disciplines.

“Researchers are often working with complex data, but the systems for discovering, accessing, and connecting those data have not evolved nearly as quickly,” says Debbie Cheng, ScD, founding Executive Director of CHDS. “DataHub is designed to help lower those barriers and make it easier for researchers to work with data in rigorous, collaborative, and responsible ways.”
Reducing Barriers to Discovery
The platform is designed to substantially reduce the time researchers spend trying to identify datasets, navigate compliance requirements, and interpret fragmented documentation. By pairing a centralized, high-impact data catalog with built-in guidance on Data Use Agreements (DUAs) and institutional compliance, DataHub helps shorten the time required to launch new research initiatives.
The initiative draws heavily upon the 40-year legacy of Boston University’s Biostatistics and Epidemiology Data Analytics Center (BEDAC). Since 1984, BEDAC has managed data engineering and secure computing environments for thousands of foundational studies. DataHub translates BEDAC’s deep institutional expertise into a scalable, modern resource, helping alleviate technical and administrative burdens that can slow academic research.
Unlocking Convergent Research
The rollout of DataHub mirrors a strategic imperative at Boston University to foster “convergence research” — merging medicine, public health, data science, and engineering to solve society’s complex health challenges. This work depends on connecting data and methods across systems shaped by different standards, technologies, and regulatory constraints.
By helping researchers connect data across these environments, DataHub supports analyses of how overlapping factors — such as neighborhood conditions, environmental exposures, and clinical histories — influence long-term population health outcomes.

“Many of today’s most important health challenges require researchers to work across disciplines and data systems that have historically remained separate,” says Yannis Paschalidis, Director of Boston University’s Hariri Institute for Computing. “DataHub can connect data, expertise, and researchers in ways that support more collaborative and convergent research.”
Privacy, security, and compliance are core to DataHub. For premier national data repositories like the NIH’s All of Us Research Program, compliant access pathways are already in place. For external or custom datasets, DataHub walks investigators through the complex processes of IRB documentation, technical de-identification, and secure computing compliance.
Collaborating with DataHub
DataHub is expanding its collaborations across Boston University and invites partnerships with data stewards, developers, and principal investigators. The ecosystem is designed to align with NIH and NSF data management and sharing requirements by offering guidance on metadata curation, documentation, compliance, and long-term data stewardship.
