[Return to Nexus Newsletter]

The mission of the Mobile and Electronic Health Affinity Research Collaborative (ME-ARC) is to conduct state-of-the art research and training in mobile and electronic health to improve health across the lifespan, particularly for underserved populations. The 2nd annual half-day symposium drew over 85, including attendees from BU’s School of Public Health, Goldman School of Dental Medicine,  Sargent College, School of Medicine, Hariri Institute for Computing, Institute for Health Systems Innovation and Policy, and Office of Technology, as well as external attendees from Boston Medical Center, Bedford VA, Harvard University, Brown University, MGH, Cura Health, and Dimagi.

Opening remarks were provided by Dr. Belinda Borrelli, who is the director of the ME-ARC and a professor at Boston University, and Dr. Karen Antman, Provost for the BU School of Medicine. The symposium consisted of three presentations that covered a variety of electronic health platforms (apps, sensors, text messaging and social media) and health behaviors. Institute Director of Research Development and Director of SAIL Andrei Lapets was one of four participants on the Opportunities and Challenges in Academy-Industry Partnerships panel session.

The ME-ARC is lead by Director Belinda Borrelli, and Co-Directors Lisa Quintilian and Julie Keysor.  The ARC is supported by the Evans Center, and the IBRO. The symposium is supported by The Evans Center/IBRO in collaboration with the Institute for Health System Innovation and Policy. The Hariri Institute continues to support the research collaborative, with Director of Research Andrei Lapets and SAIL Senior Software Engineer Frederick Jansen serving on the ARC’s steering committee and Institute Director Azer Bestavros sitting on the ARC’s external advisory board. Additionally, SAIL is currently contributing to one ongoing ARC project involving the development of a mobile health intervention app that addresses smoking addiction.

Since January 2016, the ME-ARC has hosted invited speakers at monthly seminars, and has held a yearly ME-Health symposium.  The ME-ARC coalesces mobile health resources and researchers at Boston University, and conducts state of the art mobile health pilot projects.
