{"id":4319,"date":"2015-11-03T15:34:44","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T20:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hhh\/?p=4319"},"modified":"2016-04-09T14:47:44","modified_gmt":"2016-04-09T18:47:44","slug":"apple-picking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hhh\/2015\/11\/03\/apple-picking\/","title":{"rendered":"Autumn Excursion 2016: Ipswich, Massachusetts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On October 16<sup>th<\/sup>, the Fellows, coordinators, a few host families, advisors, interns\u2014and even two Fulbright Fellows currently studying at BU\u2014traveled to Ipswich,\u00a0Massachusetts for a day of apple picking, a New England-style clambake, and a stroll on Crane\u00a0Beach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/hhh\/files\/2016\/04\/Ipswich-2.10.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/hhh\/files\/2016\/04\/Ipswich-2.10.gif\" alt=\"Ipswich-2.10\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4696\" height=\"371\" width=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipswichma.gov\/493\/History\">Ipswich<\/a> is a small town of 13,000 located on the North Shore, the coastal area between Boston and New Hampshire.\u00a0 The North Shore is known for its rocky coastline, wetlands, beaches, and natural harbors. \u00a0 It is also an important historical, cultural, and economic region of Massachusetts, which has been prominently featured in the literary works of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nathaniel_Hawthorne\">Nathaniel Hawthorne<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H._P._Lovecraft\">H. P. Lovecraft<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/T.S._Eliot\">T.S. Eliot<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Lowell\">Robert Lowell<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>We began our excursion with a tour of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.russellorchards.com\/\">Russell Orchards<\/a>, a century-old fruit farm and winery that has been owned and operated by the Russell family for the past two decades. Our mode of transport across this 120-acre farm took place by hayride\u2014first out to the apple trees, where each of us picked a bagful to take home, and then to an area where farm animals are raised. There\u00a0was a warm atmosphere, cheerful ambiance, and above all, very good\u00a0organisation.
