Alumni Profile

Jessica Zack, CAS 2015
1) What have you been doing since you graduated from BU? Details about your current and past employment? Accomplishments you’re proud of? Challenges you’ve encountered?
After graduating BU in 2015, I moved to Philadelphia to my start first and current job as an Actuarial Analyst at the property and casualty insurance company, ACE (now called Chubb). I work in the Global Analytics department building profitability indicator models for various books of business. One of the challenges I have faced since graduating is how to maintain a healthy work/life balance. I oftentimes find myself prioritizing work and study before spending time with friends and family but I’ve been doing my best to take a step back and enjoy life more. Some accomplishments I’m proud of are: passing a few actuarial exams, getting acclimated to a new city, and going on an unforgettable European vacation with close friends.
2) How your time in the department shaped your professional and personal lives?
Even though my profession is in a statistical field, I believe my time in the department improved my critical thinking and ability to articulate my thoughts and findings, skills that are crucial to my job and used on a day to day basis.
The HAA courses I took in college also had a big and positive impact on my personal life. Because of the things I learned and enthusiasm of each professor, art and visiting museums has become one of my greatest passions! It is such a joy to see a work I learned about in real life and be able to offer up some facts about it to whoever is with me.
3) Any advice that you would’ve given to your younger self?
Stop stressing out about grades! Have more fun with your friends; those memories are way more important than a 4.0.
