{"id":94,"date":"2025-03-31T16:28:58","date_gmt":"2025-03-31T20:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/globalprograms\/?page_id=94"},"modified":"2025-09-30T10:26:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T14:26:01","slug":"export-controls","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/globalprograms\/global-activity-support\/get-professional-support\/export-controls\/","title":{"rendered":"Export Controls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Export controls are federal government regulations that govern activities related to conducting education or research abroad and with foreign partners and individuals, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>transfer of controlled items, equipment, materials, software, technology, or data, for any period of time<\/li>\n<li>international students and scholars or companies in the US<\/li>\n<li>international travel<\/li>\n<li>collaborations with certain countries, entities, and individuals subject to US sanctions<\/li>\n<li>international financial transactions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Boston University has developed its own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/orc\/files\/2012\/09\/Export-Policy-Statement-10.7.13.pdf\">policy statement on Export Controls<\/a>, as it is committed to complying with US export control laws and regulations, including the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Department of State: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pmddtc.state.gov\/regulations_laws\/itar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Department of Commerce: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.access.gpo.gov\/bis\/ear\/ear_data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Export Administration Regulations (EAR)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Treasury Department: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treas.gov\/offices\/enforcement\/ofac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)<\/a> regulations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What You Need to Do<\/h2>\n<p>To ensure compliance, you should carefully consider the material on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/orc\/export\/faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Export Control<\/a> website for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/orc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research Compliance<\/a>. Violation of export control laws and regulations can result in significant civil and criminal penalties for you, your colleagues, and the University.
