Solution Chemistry |
| Age
or Grade |
11th or 12th grade students |
| Estimated
Length |
One to two class periods. |
| Prerequisite
knowledge/skills |
Some basic knowledge of solution chemistry |
| Description
of New Content |
Key definitions for the students: Solute, Solvent, Solution. |
| Goals |
Introduce solution chemistry to the students on terms that they can relate with first, and then introcude the same components with the chemical definitions. |
| Materials
Needed |
Anywhere from 3-5 different "solutions" that the students might be familiar with, (coffee, kool-aid, salt water, sand and water, salad dressing) |
|
Procedure
|
Opener - Show the students the five different solutions in front of the class and have them help you name all of the ingredients in each. Help the students understand what is actually mixed in, and what substance holds the mixture. Development - Introduce the terms solute, solvent and solution and show the class how these words relate to the solutions seen earlier. Give the students the task of working in groups and making several different salt solutions of different molarity and allow them to discuss the differences. Closure - Test the different salt solutions to make sure they are the correct concentrations, and have the students complete a worksheet with similar material.. |
| Evaluation |
Have the students write a lab report complete with introduction, purpose, procedure, results and discussion sections. |
