How to incorporate everyday science into the classroom:

We have a “Science in the News” board in the classroom. Here are some examples of assignments or postings we have made, related to the science we’re covering in our three textbooks (cell biology and genetics, environmental science, and the human body):

1. Water Use Statistics (to accompany water testing activity)
2. New Species Discovered (students did web searches for recently discovered species)
3. Mitochondria in the News (From Boston Globe Science Section)
4. Physiology of the Boston Marathon (students’ assignment for April Vacation)
5. Travel Guide to one of Earth’s Ecosystems (student made posters)
6. Global Warming in Time Magazine
7. The food pyramid (including newly updated versions) will be hung for the final chapter of the year
