I am a graduate student earning an M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. I am working with
Donna Glynn, an 8th grade science teacher at Atlantic Middle School in North Quincy. We are working to
incorporate fundamental physics concepts to enhance the science curriculum by using "activity based learning."
Students will be learning the concepts of units of measurement, heat transfer, Newton's Laws, and
the Laws of Conservation of Energy and Mass through demonstrations and performing experiments.
I have been writing up lesson plans and I teach an entire school day twice a week, as well as
designing demonstrations and activities that will be implemented for future classes. I base my lesson plans
primarily with the Massachusetts Department of Education of what foundation of physics students must have
after completing the 8th grade. I have also designed homeworks to incorporate both physics and math concepts.
The students can then see for themselves that in order to prove fundamental physics concepts, they need a good
grasp of certain math skills, such as how to plot data from an experiment.
I have also incorporated his background of electrical engineering into the lesson plans wherever he can to help
enhance student interest in science, engineering, and consequently mathematics. |
