{"id":1506,"date":"2010-09-15T12:34:38","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T16:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ghc\/?page_id=1506"},"modified":"2011-05-12T09:52:05","modified_gmt":"2011-05-12T13:52:05","slug":"traditional-systems-of-indian-medicine","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ghc\/where-we-work\/global-projects\/traditional-systems-of-indian-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Traditional Systems of Indian Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><a href=\"\/ghc\/files\/2010\/09\/indianmed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1510\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px; margin-right: 20px;\" title=\"indianmed\" src=\"\/ghc\/files\/2010\/09\/indianmed.jpg\" alt=\"indianmed\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>Traditional Systems of Indian Medicine<\/h6>\n<p><strong>Duration:<\/strong> Ongoing<\/p>\n<p><strong>Location:<\/strong> US, Canada, and India<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview: <\/strong>Traditional Indian Systems of Medicine (TISM) such as Ayurveda and Siddha originated in South Asia over 2000 years ago and are practiced by an estimated 80% of India\u2019s 1.1 billion population.\u00a0 TISM are widely believed in India to be safe and effective.\u00a0 However, BUGHC\u00a0faculty reported in the <em>Journal of American Medical Association <\/em>in 2004 that 20% of imported South Asian herbal remedies sold in Boston ethnic markets contained potentially harmful levels of lead, mercury, and\/or arsenic. A follow-up study published in 2008 also in the Journal of American Medical Association found 21% of TISM medicines sold on the Internet contained detectable levels of these metals.\u00a0 These products were manufactured in both India and the U.S. with similar percentages containing metals.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC reported 12 cases of lead poisoning associated with TISM medicines in five U.S. states between 2000-2003.\u00a0 Contamination from the environment and manufacturing processes are likely partly responsible for the problem.\u00a0 However, TISM experts also describe intentionally adding to herbal formulations <em>bhasmas<\/em>, which are compounds made with mercury, lead, arsenic, iron, zinc, and other metals.\u00a0 <em>Bhasmas <\/em>are prepared through an elaborate process that is claimed to change the form of the metal rendering it nontoxic and therapeutic.\u00a0 Recent press resulting from our publications and others have raised global safety concerns and prompted import bans by Canada, USA, Australia, and others.\u00a0 This has generated debate and controversy among key stakeholders within India including TISM practitioners, allopathic physicians, public health professionals, TISM industry, and government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accomplishments:<\/strong> BUGHC findings were a major impetus causing the Government of India to establish new standards for toxic contaminants in exported Ayurvedic medicines.\u00a0 We have subsequently developed numerous collaborations with traditional practitioners and scientists in the U.S., Canada, and India.\u00a0 We are committed to safe and effective traditional medicine use throughout the world.
