Other major emitters, including China and the European Union, have made it clear that they still support the treaty, but U.S. absence will change the political dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. withdrawal makes it more important for the remaining countries to show strong political commitment to collectively implementing the treaty. At the New York Climate Action Summit in September 2019, U.N. Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres called on countries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/assets\/pdf\/CAS_main_release.pdf\">accelerate <\/a>action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Henrik Selin\u00a0conducts research and teaches classes on global and regional politics and policy making on environment and sustainable development. His most recent book is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.routledge.com\/books\/details\/9780415628822\/\">EU and Environmental Governance,<\/a> by Routledge Press, and is also the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/catalog\/item\/default.asp?ttype=2&amp;tid=12170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Governance of Hazardous Chemicals: Challenges of Multilevel Management<\/a>\u00a0by MIT Press.\u00a0Selin is the faculty coordinator for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/academics\/graduate\/ir_and_environmental_policy\/\">IR &amp; Environmental Policy<\/a>\u00a0program.
