POSTPONED - The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society with Joseph E. Stiglitz
- Starts4:00 pm on Tuesday, September 10, 2024
- Ends5:30 pm on Tuesday, September 10, 2024
The United States is a nation born from the conviction that people must be free. But, according to one of the nation’s most preeminent economists, since the middle of the last century, that idea has been co-opted – cloaking exploitation in the rhetoric of freedom.
In his new book, “The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society,” Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz dissects America’s current economic system and the political ideology that created it. He argues that “free” and unfettered markets have exploited consumers, workers and the environment alike and fed populist movements that now pose a real threat to true economic and political freedom.
As an economic advisor to presidents and as former Chief Economist at the World Bank, Stiglitz has witnessed these profound changes firsthand, and he writes that such failures follow from the elites’ unshakeable dedication to “the neoliberal experiment.”
The “Road to Freedom” shows how economics—including recent advances in which Stiglitz has played an important role—reframes how to think about freedom and the role of the state in a 21st century society.
On Tuesday, September 10 from 4:00-5:30PM, join us for a hybrid event featuring Joseph E. Stiglitz, Nobel Laureate in Economics and Professor at Columbia University, for a conversation on his new book and vision of personal and economic freedom.
This event is part of the Fall 2024 Global Economic Governance Book Talk series.
The first 20 attendees will receive a free copy of the book. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided at 4PM prior to the start of the event.
