Club Sports Injury Evaluation & Care Injury Care for Club Sports Student-Athletes
Club Sports student-athletes have access to injury evaluation and care facilitated by licensed medical providers in Student Health Services (SHS) Primary Care.
If a student-athlete is injured while participating in their club sport, they may request an evaluation by sending a secure message to “Online, Athletic Training” through SHS Patient Connect.
Please note that while the message box is named Online, Athletic Training, it is monitored and managed by Primary Care clinicians. Typically, a student-athlete will be seen by an Athletic Trainer, though in some cases care is provided by a Primary Care clinician (sports medicine physician or nurse practitioner) to expedite and ensure access to care.
How to Request Care if Your Team Does Not Have an Assigned Athletic Trainer
If your club team does not have an Athletic Trainer assigned, you may request health care services through SHS Patient Connect:
- Log in to Patient Connect
- Navigate to Messages
- Click New Message
- Select Athletic Training Department (Varsity/Club Athletes)
- Choose Request an Appointment
- In both the Subject and Concern fields, write: “Requesting an appointment”
- Complete the rest of the form with as much detail as possible, including your full availability for an appointment
What Happens After You Submit a Request
Once a message is received:
- SHS Staff reviews the request.
- If an in-person evaluation is needed, the student athlete will be scheduled for an appointment with a clinician from Primary Care (nurse practitioner or physician)
- Following the visit, the clinician may provide:
- Home care instructions or self-management strategies
- Referral to a medical specialist
- Referral for physical therapy
- Other appropriate follow-up care
SHS determines the most appropriate next steps based on the clinical presentation.
Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation
Some student-athletes may referred to Physical Therapy.
These services are available both on and near campus, including The Ryan Center for Physical Therapy, located at the rear of the FitRec building.
Please Note:
Patients referred for physical therapy should ask their clinician for a copy of the referral and then call or visit the Ryan Center in person to schedule an appointment.
This is the most expedient method and helps avoid unnecessary delays in beginning care. Rehabilitation and treatment of injuries will be managed through physical therapy and not Athletic Training.
Secondary Insurance Coverage
Club Sports student-athletes who:
- Are on an active club sport roster, and
- Are injured while participating in their club sport
are eligible for secondary insurance coverage.
A secondary insurance claim form will be completed and submitted by the SHS clinician at the time of the visit.
Please note:
- Intramural sports injuries,
- Recreational/fitness injuries, or
- Injuries involving teams not sponsored by the Department of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (PERD)
are not eligible for secondary insurance coverage.
