Beginner (sweep) Lessons

This is a learn to row program that is meant to teach people how to sweep row.  The class will begin with some erg work in understanding the basic mechanics of the stroke.  It will then transition to on the water work in a “barge” hull which is a catamaran style hull meant to provide a stable surface for executing the motion of the stroke.  You will also learn how to carry equipment, set your rigging, understand basic commands, and the basics of the rowing stroke.  After learning the fundamentals in the barge, we will transition to eights hulls to continue the learning process.  This program will build proficiency in the rowing sweep motion. This session can be followed by the Intermediate (sweep) Lessons in the second 3 weeks.

Beginner (sculling) Lessons

This is an introduction for those who are new to sculling and rowing. No experience required.  The class will begin with some erg work in understanding the basic mechanics of the stroke.  It will then transition to one the water work in “Tubby” hulls which is a wide, well-balanced single hull meant to provide extra stability for those who are new to the sport.  You will learn how to carry equipment, set your rigging, understand basic commands, and the basics of the rowing sculling stroke.  This program will build proficiency in the rowing sculling motion.  This session can be followed by the Intermediate (sculling) Lessons in the second 3 weeks.

Intermediate (sweep) Lessons

This class is designed for athletes who have been introduced to the sport of rowing and are looking to improve their technique, understanding, and boat feel.  We will revisit the erg motion, providing technical feedback to help improve posture and power on the rowing machine.  We will get on the water in sweep hulls, comprising of eights and fours, breaking down the technique to improve the overall proficiency.  This is an opportunity for rowers to learn more about rowing, take some higher strokes, and build their sense of confidence when sweep rowing.  This lesson can follow the Beginner (sweep) Lessons in the first 3 weeks.

Intermediate (sculling) Lessons

This class is for athletes who have had previous sculling experience however minimal.  It is an opportunity to revisit the erg motion, working to improve posture and power on the rowing machine as well as increase comfortability working in smaller sculling boats (1xs and 2xs).  Students will learn about navigating a small boat safely and successfully, how to understand the rules of the river, and how to build up their technical prowess over the course of the 3-week program.  This lesson can follow the Beginner (sculling) Lessons in the first 3 weeks.
