FitRec offers numerous American Red Cross certification courses, open to the BU community as well as the public. Get certified in our state-of-the-art Aquatics Center and turn your passion for swimming into a lifelong skill and potentially even a career! Courses are offered in the fall and spring; be sure to check the course requirements before selecting a course.
Lifeguard Training
Lifeguards are certified according to the latest ARC Lifeguard Training program. Successful completion of the course will result in a two-year certification in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR, and AED. This class is also appropriate for former lifeguards whose certifications have expired.
Waterfront Lifeguard Training
This American Red Cross (ARC) course is designed for students who are interested in working at non-surf, open-water facilities, including parks, resorts, and summer camps with waterfront areas. Successful completion of the course will result in a two-year certification in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED (automated external defibrillator), and Waterfront skills. This class is also appropriate for former lifeguards whose certifications have expired.
Lifeguard Training Review
This course is a review for individuals who are currently certified as lifeguards and wish to revisit the material before taking recertification exams. It covers the necessary Lifeguard Training course material as well as the practical skills in the classroom and includes swimming drills in the pool. This class is an excellent review prior to exam certification.
Waterfront Lifeguard Training Review
This course is a review for individuals who are currently certified as Waterfront Lifeguards and wish to revisit the material before taking recertification exams. It covers the necessary Waterfront Lifeguard Training course material as well as practical skills in the classroom and swimming drills in the pool. This class is an excellent review prior to a recertification exam.
Lifeguard Training Instructor
Take the next step and become a Lifeguard Training Instructor. Candidates who successfully complete the course will be certified to teach Lifeguard Training classes and other related certification classes.
Water Safety Instructor
This certification class will prepare students to become American Red Cross–certified swim instructors. You’ll improve your own swimming and safety skills while increasing your job opportunities. Those who successfully pass the exam are eligible to teach swim lessons to both adults and children. Classes are offered during both academic semesters and over the summer.
