However, that does <strong>not<\/strong> mean all of your expenses will be paid, even in your first year.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on your demonstrated need, you will be responsible for a portion of your expenses. Even if BU aid goes up each year by the same percentage as the tuition increase, you&#8217;ll still be responsible for some of the increase in tuition, food, housing, and other costs. You will need to plan for this and think about how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/families-counselors\/plan\/\">minimize expenses and maximize resources<\/a>. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/how-aid-works\/eligibility\/bu-scholarship-assurance\/\">BU Scholarship Assurance<\/a> enables you to plan for the cost of your entire degree by guaranteeing your Boston University need-based scholarship for each of your undergraduate years!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before you make a decision to enroll at BU we strongly recommend that you make a plan and assess the financial feasibility of paying all four years at BU based on the initial award offered with your admission decision. It may take 1-3 days for receipt of your appeal to tracked on your To-Do List.<\/p>\n<h5>How to Apply for Financial Aid as a Continuing Student New Applicant<\/h5>\n<p>If you are a continuing student and did not receive BU Financial Assistance or were not able to apply for BU Financial assistance in previous years and have had a change in circumstances, you can follow these instructions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/how-aid-works\/eligibility\/reconsideration\/newapps\/\">submit a new application for financial assistance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important Questions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">When can I submit an appeal?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can submit <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one<\/span> appeal per academic year prior to the deposit deadline (admitted students) or payment deadline (continuing students) for that year. Total Parent Income is not always the same as the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) on your tax return as it includes additional income sources.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">What is the BU Special Assistance Scholarship?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>BU Special Assistance Scholarship is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>one-time<\/strong><\/span> BU appeal scholarship in recognition of circumstances impacting a student&#8217;s plan to pay for BU. A BU Special Assistance Scholarship is not included in BU Scholarship Assurance and will not be renewed in subsequent academic years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">What does a successful Appeal look like?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A successful appeal answers two questions: &#8220;What was your plan to pay for the upcoming academic year?&#8221; and &#8220;How have these circumstances disrupted that plan?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Compelling appeals are complete appeals (FAFSA, CSS Profile, Tax Returns &amp; W-2s) uploaded through the BU portal which demonstrate a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">significant<\/span> change in circumstances from your initial applications that has not been previously reviewed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/finaid\/files\/2024\/11\/Types-of-Appeals-450x636.png\" alt=\"Table Describing different appeal reasons\" width=\"450\" height=\"636\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11265 size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/files\/2024\/11\/Types-of-Appeals-450x636.png 450w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/files\/2024\/11\/Types-of-Appeals-724x1024.png 724w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/files\/2024\/11\/Types-of-Appeals-768x1086.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/files\/2024\/11\/Types-of-Appeals-1086x1536.png 1086w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/files\/2024\/11\/Types-of-Appeals-1448x2048.png 1448w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/finaid\/files\/2024\/11\/Types-of-Appeals.png 1587w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>cannot consider<\/strong><\/span> appeals based on a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">job loss from the current tax year:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your family has experienced a recent loss of employment, we cannot consider this circumstance until the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>following academic year<\/strong><\/span> once tax returns are available to document the change in income.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All appeals are carefully considered, however, we cannot guarantee additional funding for any appeal.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">What is a significant change in financial circumstances?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A significant change in financial circumstances is a change of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">greater than 15%<\/span> of your family&#8217;s annual income compared to the income on your initial applications.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example A &#8211; Successful Appeal<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First Year: AGI on 2024 taxes is reported as $150,000.<\/p>\n<p>Second Year: AGI on 2025 taxes is reported as $110,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong> Since the annual income for this student&#8217;s second year is greater than 15% less than the AGI on their initial applications, this change in circumstance could be considered in an appeal.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example\u00a0 B &#8211; Unsuccessful Appeal<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First Year: AGI on 2023 taxes is reported as $150,000.<\/p>\n<p>Second Year: AGI on 2024 taxes is reported as $200,000.<\/p>\n<p>Third-Year: AGI on 2025 taxes is reported as $168,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:\u00a0<\/strong>While this family&#8217;s AGI did decrease by more than 15% from 2024 to 2025, the income reported in 2025 is still higher than the income reported on the initial applications ($150,000). Since BU offers awards that are guaranteed for four years, the award was set based on the lower 2023 AGI. In this case, even though 2025 is lower than 2024, it is still higher than the initial income that the current award was established with and thus would not result in an increase in eligibility.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Can I request reconsideration for a merit award decision?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merit-based scholarship recipients are selected by the Board of Admissions and selection decisions are final. Scholarship terms and conditions, including award amounts, are pre-established.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">What if my financial situation worsens after the start of the academic year?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current students who experience a change in financial circumstances after the appeal deadline will be able to submit an appeal based on these circumstances for the f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ollowing academic year<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also contact BU Financial Assistance to discuss what financing options and other resources are available for the current academic year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">My appeal request was denied. All appeals are reviewed by our appeal review board and carefully considered.
