Federal Direct PLUS Loan

Federal credit-based loan available to parents of dependent undergraduate students - parents must pass the PLUS Loan credit check and may borrow annually up to the cost of the student's education not covered by financial aid. Repayment of principal and interest begins within 60 days of the final disbursement of the loan. MEFA Loan for Undergraduate Students

The MEFA Loan for Undergraduate Education is a private credit-based loan offered by the Massachusetts Educational Finance Authority (MEFA), a not-for-profit state authority. The parent (or other credit-worthy individual) and the student are co-borrowers and are equally responsible for loan repayment. The MEFA Loan for Graduate Education is a private credit-based loan offered by the Massachusetts Educational Finance Authority (MEFA), a not-for-profit state authority. The student is the primary borrower on the graduate MEFA Loan. Maximum annual loan limit is the student's cost of education not covered by financial aid, minimum amount is $2000. Boston University Grant

Boston University gift aid provided to students who meet all eligibility criteria for need-based financial aid. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average.

 

Boston University Appeal Grant

Boston University gift aid provided to students with calculated financial eligibility in response to a request (and documentation of eligibility) for additional assistance. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average.

 

Charles River Housing Grant

Charles River Housing Grant is awarded to students who meet criteria for need-based financial aid and also live in University-owned housing on the Charles River Campus. Renewal criteria: Students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average, and continue to meet the housing requirement.

 

Trustee Scholarship

Boston University merit award offered to students with superior academic records. Nomination by principals and headmasters of public and independent high schools is required for consideration. Trustee Scholarship covers full undergraduate tuition, the University Orientation fee, and mandatory undergraduate student fees. Scholars are required to live in Boston University housing on the Charles River campus. Renewal criteria include the satisfactory completion of at least 12 credits each semester earning a minimum grade point average of 3.50 for the prior academic year. College of Fine Arts Performance Award

Boston University scholarships offered to students who enroll in the Schools of Music, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts and display a high degree of artistic talent as demonstrated in an audition or through a portfolio review. Renewal criteria include continued enrollment and participation in activities of the particular College of Fine Arts school. BU Community Service Award

Boston University gift aid provided to graduates of City of Boston public high schools based on calculated financial eligibility. Full financial eligibility, as calculated by BU Financial Assistance, is met without student loans. Recipients must maintain a 2.00 cumulative grade point average, successfully complete at least 12 credits per semester and fulfill a (faculty or staff mentor supported) community service requirement. Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship

Full-tuition Boston University merit award offered to College of Engineering students designed to recognize those with strong math and science backgrounds. In addition to meeting other criteria, each candidate must also submit a 500-word essay. Recipients will also receive one semester of funding in their first two years of study to participate in a research program with a College of Engineering faculty member. Those who complete the Bachelor of Science program with at least a 3.40 grade point average are guaranteed admission to a Boston University Engineering master’s degree program. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.20 for the prior academic year. Thomas M. Menino Scholarship

Boston University full-tuition scholarship offered to graduates of Boston public high schools on basis of academic achievement, leadership, and merit by a committee of representatives from Boston University, Boston Public Schools, and the Boston Mayor's Office. Residence in Boston University housing on the Charles River campus is required of recipients of this award. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. Cardinal Medeiros Scholarship

Boston University full-tuition scholarship offered to graduating seniors from parochial high schools in the Archdiocese of Boston. Recipients are nominated by their schools and chosen for their academic achievement, leadership ability, and community service. Residence in Boston University housing on the Charles River campus is required of recipients of this award. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.20 for the prior academic year. The Boston University Air Force ROTC Supplemental Tuition Grant is offered in conjunction with your Air Force ROTC Scholarship and covers the difference between your ROTC Scholarship and standard University tuition. You must meet required University satisfactory academic progress standards, and be in good standing with ROTC in order for this grant to be renewed.

ROTC Stipend

The estimated ROTC Stipend is based on estimated monthly benefits provided to you by the federal government over the course of the academic year. You receive the ROTC Stipend directly. Contact your ROTC office if you have questions about the estimated ROTC Stipend.

 

Air Force ROTC Incentive Grant

The Boston University Air Force ROTC Incentive Grant is a half-tuition award offered in conjunction with your Air Force ROTC Scholarship. It is for your freshman year only and is not renewable.

 

Army ROTC Incentive Grant

The Boston University Army ROTC Incentive Grant is a half-tuition award offered in conjunction with your Army ROTC 3-year ROTC Scholarship. It is for your freshman year only and is not renewable.

 

Projected ROTC Grant

Projected ROTC grant is an estimated award from the federal government which is based on information received from your ROTC unit indicating you are eligible to receive an ROTC Scholarship. The actual ROTC money will be credited to your Student Account when it is received from the federal government.

 

Projected ROTC Room Grant

The Colonel Pershing Room Grant is a non-renewable grant for your freshman year only. It is awarded to assist you with the cost of on-campus room charges.

 

Colonel Pershing ROTC Grant

The Colonel Pershing ROTC Grant is a non-renewable need-based grant that was established to assist ROTC students with costs associated with enrolling at the University and participating in the ROTC program.

 

Methodist Clergy Scholarship

Scholarship awarded by Boston University to children of active, ordained Methodist ministers. Your status must be confirmed by your Resident Bishop. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. Presidential Scholarship

Boston University scholarship offered to students with exceptionally strong academic records. Renewal criteria include satisfactory completion of at least 12 credits each semester earning a minimum grade point average of 3.20 for the prior academic year. Tuition Exchange Scholarship

Tuition Exchange Scholarship recipients are selected by the Boston University Board of Admissions and by the Scholarship Committee based on academic strength. An applicant for the scholarship must be the dependent child of an eligible employee of a college or university that also participates in the Tuition Exchange Program. Recipients must maintain good academic standing to be eligible for renewal. University Scholarship

The University Scholarship is offered to students with exceptional financial need and outstanding academic achievement and promise. Financial aid is offered up to the student’s full demonstrated need, as calculated by BU Financial Assistance. A special provision of the University Scholarship ensures it will increase at the same percentage rate as any future tuition increase. Renewal criteria include satisfactory completion of at least 12 credits each semester, maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00, and continuing to meet all other eligibility requirements.

 

National Scholars Award

Boston University grant awarded to students selected as National Merit finalists who have exceptionally strong academic records and also have designated Boston University as their first-choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.00. Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Boston University grant offered to transfer students enrolling as juniors at the University with a minimum of sixty transferable credits. Students must be nominated by a Phi Theta Kappa chapter advisor to be considered for this two year award. Renewal criteria include the satisfactory completion of at least 12 credits each semester earning a minimum 3.20 grade point average. Federal Pell Grant

Gift aid awarded by the federal government to students demonstrating substantial financial need based on information submitted on the FAFSA. Renewal criteria: students who have completed fewer than two years at Boston University must have completed a minimum of 12 credits each semester with a cumulative grade point average of at least 1.70 the prior academic year. Students who have completed at least two years at Boston University must complete at least 12 credits each semester and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00.

 

Federal SEOG

A grant program funded by a federal allocation and a Boston University matching contribution. Recipients are selected by Boston University in accordance with federal regulations which stipulate that SEOG be awarded to students with the lowest family contributions and greatest financial need, usually Pell Grant recipients. Renewal criteria: students who have completed fewer than two years at Boston University must have completed a minimum of 12 credits each semester with cumulative grade point average of at least 1.70 the prior academic year. Students who have completed at least two years at Boston University must complete at least 12 credits each semester and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00.

 

Federal Perkins Loan

Federal loan awarded to those demonstrating high financial need. This is a federal loan administered and funded by BU and loan repayments of prior recipients. If you are a first-time borrower this loan will NOT be credited to your account until you submit a completed Perkins Loan Promissory Note to BU Financial Assistance. Completing a Perkins Loan exit counseling session is required prior to separation/graduation from the University. Renewal criteria: students who have completed fewer than two years at Boston University must have completed a minimum of 12 credits each semester with a cumulative grade point average of at least 1.70 the prior academic year. Students who have completed at least two years at Boston University must complete at least 12 credits each semester and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00.

 

Federal Work Study

Your award determines the maximum amount of money you may earn during the course of the specified period, i.e. academic year or summer. The award amount indicated is NOT deducted from your bill. Earnings are paid directly to you on a weekly, or bi-weekly basis, based on hours actually worked. Renewal criteria: students who have completed fewer than 2 years at Boston University must have completed a minimum of 12 credits each semester with a cumulative grade point average of at least 1.70 the prior academic year. Students who have completed at least two years at Boston University must complete at least 12 credits each semester and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00.

 

Projected State Scholarship

An award from your state of residence. Any amount indicated on an initial Financial Aid Award notification is estimated on the basis of information on the FAFSA and PROFILE. State grants for which you are eligible but do not ultimately receive will not be replaced with Boston University grant funds. Renewal criteria: students who have completed fewer than two years at Boston University must have completed a minimum of 12 credits each semester with a cumulative grade point average of at least 1.70 the prior academic year. Students who have completed at least two years at Boston University must complete at least 12 credits each semester and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00.

 

Massachusetts No Interest Loan

A loan from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts offered to students demonstrating substantial financial need based on information submitted on the FAFSA. Eligible students (and the parents of dependent students) must be residents of Massachusetts and enrolled full time. A promissory note and entrance interview, which will be forwarded to you from BU Financial Assistance, must be completed prior to any loan funds crediting to your account. A Massachusetts No Interest Loan exit interview is required prior to separation/graduation from the University.

Boston/Brookline Fire Fighters Award

Boston University full-tuition grant restricted to the sons and daughters of Boston or Brookline fire fighters who were killed in the line of duty. Bunker Hill Community College Scholarship

Boston University full-tuition scholarship offered, for a total of four semesters, to graduates of Bunker Hill Community College transferring to Boston University with at least 60 credits. Residence in Boston University housing on the Charles River campus is required of recipients of this award. Chelsea High Scholarship

Boston University full-tuition scholarship offered to graduates of Chelsea High School on basis of academic achievement, leadership, and merit. College of Engineering FIRST Scholarship

The College of Engineering FIRST Scholarship is a four-year scholarship offered by Boston University. It is awarded to a student who has participated in the FIRST Robotics program at least one full season in high school with a FIRST Robotics team and who has applied and been admitted to the College of Engineering. FIRST Scholars will also receive funding for up to 10 hours per week to participate in a research program with a College of Engineering faculty member for one semester in the first two years of study. Additionally, those who maintain an overall grade point average of 3.40 are guaranteed admission to a Boston University College of Engineering Master of Science program. Renewal criteria include the satisfactory completion of at least 12 credits each semester earning a minimum grade point average of 3.20 for the prior academic year. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship

Boston University scholarship offered to students who have embraced the memory and ideals of one of the University's most prominent alumni, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (STH '55). Recipients demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, proven leadership abilities and a strong commitment to social justice and community involvement. Scholars must complete a minimum of 100 community services hours each year in conjunction with Boston University's Howard Thurman Center for Race, Culture, and Ethnicity. Residence in Boston University housing on the Charles River campus is required. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.00 for the prior academic year. Boston University scholarship offered to students applying to the College of Engineering with exceptionally strong academic records. Honorary award offered in lieu of the Engineering Scholars Award to students who are also receiving Boston University tuition remission. John Gallagher Scholarship

John Gallagher Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated outstanding academic achievement despite extreme hardship. Massachusetts Bay Community College Scholarship

Boston University full-tuition scholarship offered, for a total of four semesters, to graduates of Massachusetts Bay Community College transferring to Boston University with at least 60 credits. Recipients are nominated by Massachusetts Bay Community College and selected by Boston University. Residence in Boston University housing on the Charles River campus is required of recipients of this award. Massachusetts Pre-Engineering Program (MassPEP) scholars are selected based on their academic record, contribution to school and community, and the recommendation of the Mass PEP Program. Residence in Boston University Housing on the Charles River campus and enrollment in the College of Engineering is required. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.30 for the prior academic year. National Achievement Scholarships are offered to academically promising African American students selected as National Achievement finalists who have designated Boston University as their first-choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Leary Firefighters Foundation Scholarship

The Leary Firefighters Foundation Scholarship Fund provides one renewable need-based tuition scholarship award to a full-time first year entering Boston University undergraduate degree candidate who is or was the legal dependent of a deceased, disabled, retired or active firefighter. Candidates must provide documentation of his/her relationship to a firefighter and be a U. S. citizen or legal permanent resident. Preference is given to residents of areas served by the Leary Firefighters Foundation, i.e., the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the State of New York, and the State of Louisiana.

 

Posse Foundation Scholarship

The Boston University Posse Scholarship is awarded to students who enroll at Boston University through the University's partnership with the Posse Foundation. Founded in 1989, the Posse Foundation identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential that may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Boston University awards a four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarship to each Posse Scholar. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. Recipients are nominated by Roxbury Community College and selected by Boston University. Residence in Boston University housing on the Charles River campus is required of recipients of the award. Renewal criteria: students must satisfactorily complete at least 12 credits each semester and maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. University Scholars - Honorary

Honorary award offered in lieu of the half-tuition University Scholarship to students who are also receiving Boston University tuition remission. Students are selected based on their exceptionally strong academic records. Renewal criteria include the satisfactory completion of at least 12 credits each semester earning a minimum grade point average of 3.20 for the prior academic year. Graduate Federal PLUS Loan

The Federal Graduate PLUS Loan is a credit-based loan which is available to assist graduate students with the costs of higher education. Eligible graduate student borrowers are those who are enrolled at least half-time (6 credits per semester) in a graduate or professional degree that leads to a master's, law or medical degree.
