SUBMITTING 2023/2024 FEDERAL VERIFICATION DOCUMENTS
The documents required of you will be listed on the MyBU Applicant portal and MyBU Student portal. First, check to see what documents are required of you. Then, use the information below to learn, 1) what qualifies as acceptable documentation and, 2) how to obtain and submit those documents to BU Financial Assistance.
PARENT INCOME VERIFICATION FOR FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID
If your parent(s) were required by the IRS to file a 2021 U.S. Income Tax Return, provide one of the following:
- If your parent(s) were eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) when completing the FAFSA and they did so, you have satisfied this requirement. If you were eligible to use the DRT and did not do so, access your FAFSA and use the DRT to update your FAFSA now. BU will access this updated data via your FAFSA transmission to BU.
- Or, submit a copy of their 2021 federal income tax return signed by the tax filer.
- Or, submit a Tax Return Transcript for 2021:
- Go to www.irs.gov. Select “Get Your Tax Records” then “Get Transcript by Mail”. Enter taxpayer SSN, Date of Birth, Street Address, Zip Code, and click “Continue”. Select “Return Transcript” (not “Account Transcript”) and select “Tax Year” (i.e., 2021) and click “Continue”.
- Or, call 1-800-908-9946 and follow the prompts.
If your parent(s) did not and were not required by the IRS to file a 2021 U.S. Income Tax Return, provide each of the following:
- Submit W-2 forms for all sources of earned income
- And, submit an Income Tax Non-filer Statement
- And, provide a 2021 IRS Verification of Non-filing Letter by requesting an IRS Tax Return Transcript for 2021. Once the IRS determines that your parent(s) did not and are not required to file, they will issue an IRS Verification of Non-filing Letter.
- Go to www.irs.gov. Select “Get Your Tax Records” then “Get Transcript by Mail”. Enter taxpayer SSN, Date of Birth, Street Address, Zip Code, and click “Continue”. Select “Return Transcript” (not “Account Transcript”) and select “Tax Year” (i.e., 2021) and click “Continue”.
- Or, call 1-800-908-9946 and follow the prompts.
If your parent(s) filed income taxes in a country other than the USA, download and complete the Foreign Income Verification form and submit it as instructed.
Entering students – submit these documents directly to BU Financial Assistance via the MyBU Applicant portal.
Enrolled students – submit these documents to BU via the ProVerifier+ dashboard. ProVerifier+ will guide you through the federal verification process, secure and maintain confidentiality of your income documents, and help you with any questions.
STUDENT INCOME VERIFICATION FOR FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID
If you were required by the IRS to file a 2021 U.S. Income Tax Return, provide one of the following:
- If you were eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) when you completed your FAFSA and you did so, you have satisfied this requirement. - And, if you are an independent student (If you were required to provide parental information on your FAFSA, you are not an independent student and this requirement does not pertain to you.) provide a 2021 IRS Verification of Non-filing Letter by requesting an IRS Tax Return Transcript for 2021. Once the IRS determines that you did not and are not required to file, they will issue an IRS Verification of Non-filing Letter.
If you filed income taxes in a country other than the USA, download and complete the Foreign Income Verification form and submit it as instructed.

HOUSEHOLD MEMBER LISTING
Complete and submit a Household Member Listing form to verify household members.
Entering students – submit these documents directly to BU Financial Assistance via the MyBU Applicant portal.
Enrolled students – submit these documents to BU via the ProVerifier+ dashboard. ProVerifier+ will guide you through the federal verification process, secure and maintain confidentiality of your income documents, and help you with any questions.
FEDERAL IDENTITY VERIFICATION
Complete the Federal Identity Verification and Statement of Educational Purpose form.
- Submit this form and present a government issued Photo ID in person to BU Financial Assistance, 881 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, Massachusetts o2043. A copy of your ID must and will be retained by BU Financial Assistance.
- If appearing in person at BU Financial Assistance is not possible (e.g., if you are an online student or are living abroad), submit copies of these documents certified by a notary public.
