Law colleagues<strong>Elizabeth Cerrato,\u00a0Jack Beerman, Lexi Ongman, Zachary Dubin, <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Alissa Leonard<\/strong> joined her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Ingber <\/strong>of the <strong>School of Law<\/strong> attended the American Society of International Law annual meeting between March 27 and 30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>WASHINGTON REACTS TO ADMISSIONS SCANDAL<\/h2>\n<p>Lawmakers are stepping up their oversight of the college admissions process in the wake of the U.S. Department of Justice&#8217;s (DOJ) charges that dozens of wealthy parents used bribery and cheating to secure their children&#8217;s admission into college.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On Thursday, House Education and Labor Committee Democrats hosted a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=c9b983dd92&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">briefing<\/a><\/strong> highlighting inequities in the admissions process. Admissions officers, scholars, and think tank officials discussed the structural barriers facing first-generation and underrepresented minority college applicants.<\/li>\n<li>Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) the senior Democrat on the Senate tax-writing committee, pledged to introduce <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=1b3ef36cd0&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that would preclude\u00a0use of the charitable deduction for gifts given to colleges either prior to or during the enrollment of the donor family\u2019s children.<\/li>\n<li>News outlets are reporting that the U.S. Department of Education has launched its own <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=cf9944a958&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> <\/strong>of whether the eight schools mentioned in the DOJ charges have\u00a0violated the Department&#8217;s rules and regulations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>BUZZ BITS&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos testified this week before both\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=3258a58590&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=33737ddce5&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate<\/a><\/strong> Appropriations subcommittees\u00a0regarding the Administration&#8217;s proposed fiscal year 2020 budget for education.<\/li>\n<li>National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) head\u00a0James Bridenstine testified\u00a0regarding the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=693e003cd4&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA budget request<\/a><\/strong> before a House Appropriations subcommittee on Thursday.<\/li>\n<li>The House Subcommittee on Intelligence and Emerging Threats and Capabilities examined the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=84018c2d9e&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Defense&#8217;s\u00a0science and technology programs<\/a><\/strong> on Thursday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>EVENTS NEWS YOU CAN USE<\/h2>\n<p>The last Research on Tap of the semester will take place on April 2 with a focus on mechanobiology: how physical cues, such as force and stretch, affect biological processes.
