{"id":9060,"date":"2018-10-12T10:49:48","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T14:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/federal\/?p=9060"},"modified":"2018-10-12T10:52:05","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T14:52:05","slug":"bu-in-dc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/federal\/2018\/10\/12\/bu-in-dc\/","title":{"rendered":"BUzz Bits"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>BU IN DC<\/h2>\n<p>Students in the <strong>Boston University Washington, DC Study Abroad Program<\/strong> met with staff in the offices of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=31cf222821&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senator Ed Markey<\/a><\/strong> (D-MA) and Representative Niki Tsongas (D-MA) on October 5.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>BUZZ BITS&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Government Accountability Office (GAO)\u00a0evaluated whether the United States adequately supports\u00a0&#8220;research that could lead to transformational technological advances.&#8221; GAO&#8217;s report found that federal agencies should better collaborate in order to maintain leadership\u00a0in both\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=0c6d7f4190&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quantum computing and synthetic biology<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The House Subcommittee on Information Technology\u00a0issued a white paper detailing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=ce1e36b8e3&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the impact of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=2407652046&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=4375304261&amp;e=4a051cec5e\"> on U.S. policy<\/a><\/strong>. The paper\u00a0recommends federal investment in\u00a0artificial intelligence research, education and training for the federal workforce, updates to federal privacy laws, and a review of existing federal regulations.<\/li>\n<li>The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) is\u00a0requesting comments on its\u00a0update to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=ab9439cb6e&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national strategy for artificial intelligence<\/a><\/strong> (AI) research and development. Investigators with ideas on which emerging AI research topics the government should support should comment by October 26.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>ENERGY RESEARCH BILL SIGNED INTO\u00a0LAW<\/h2>\n<p>On September 28, President Donald J. Trump signed into law the Department of Energy (DOE) Research and Innovation Act (Public Law 115-246), which sets Congressional\u00a0research\u00a0priorities for DOE&#8217;s Office of Science for the first time in nearly a decade. The new law provides guidance across all six programs in the Office, enshrining key activities into law while directing new research activity as well. The Act formally authorizes Energy Frontier Research Centers and Energy Innovation Hubs for the first time, creates both solar fuels and energy storage cross-program initiatives, and mandates research on the biological impacts of radiation in\u00a0small quantities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=4dfd50a4e2&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Read the bill<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>GRANTS NEWS YOU CAN USE<\/h2>\n<p>Are you searching for new funding opportunities in the social sciences?
