The ban prohibits visitors from seven countries from entering the United States, with limited exceptions. In an amicus brief submitted during the\u00a0<em>Trump v. Hawaii <\/em>proceedings<em>,<\/em>\u00a0universities had decried the ban as jeopardizing &#8220;the vital contributions made by foreign students, scholars, and faculty by telling the world in the starkest terms that America is no longer receptive to them.&#8221; Justice Sonia Sotomayor cited the impact on higher education as one reason for her dissent in the case.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/17pdf\/17-965_h315.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Read the decision<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>POSITIVE SIGNS FOR NIH BUDGET<\/h2>\n<p>The Congressional committees responsible for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget recently passed spending bills which would increase the agency&#8217;s budget even further beyond the $3 billion increase signed into law in March. A bill passed by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appropriations.senate.gov\/news\/senate-committee-clears-fy2019-labor-hhs-and-education-appropriations-bill\" target=\"_blank\">Senate<\/a><\/strong> Appropriations Committee yesterday\u00a0proposes a $2 billion increase in fiscal year 2019, while a bill passed by a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/appropriations.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=395353\" target=\"_blank\">House<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0subcommittee recommends a $1.25 billion increase. A final budget for the agency will be determined once the measures make their way through the full Congressional approval process, which is likely to extend past the November election. The outlook is positive for a fourth straight year of increased funding for the agency, which is currently funded at $37 billion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>BUZZ BITS&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives defeated a bill (H.R. 4760) which would have provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpo.gov\/fdsys\/pkg\/BILLS-115hr4760ih\/xml\/BILLS-115hr4760ih.xml#toc-HE4C842B0085D4672926005DC5B1B6180\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>legal status to undocumented young people<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0who were left in legal limbo following the rescission\u00a0of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program last fall.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2018\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-wins-congressional-primary-in-new-york-city\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alumna Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a><\/strong> (CAS &#8217;11) caught Washington&#8217;s attention by defeating\u00a0incumbent Congressman Joe Crowley\u00a0in the Democratic primary in New York&#8217;s 14th Congressional District on Tuesday, a significant upset\u00a0of a member of the House Democratic leadership.<\/li>\n<li>The White House issued a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/National-Near-Earth-Object-Preparedness-Strategy-and-Action-Plan-23-pages-1MB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">strategic plan to better respond to near-Earth objects<\/a><\/strong>, such as asteroids, possibly striking the planet.
