{"id":5438,"date":"2016-09-09T10:15:50","date_gmt":"2016-09-09T14:15:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/federal\/?p=5438"},"modified":"2016-09-08T15:28:03","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T19:28:03","slug":"nsf-requests-input-on-strategic-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/federal\/2016\/09\/09\/nsf-requests-input-on-strategic-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"NSF Requests Input on Strategic Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span><span>BU IN DC<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><strong>Vice President and Associate Provost for Research Gloria Waters<\/strong> attended a meeting of the University Research Forum at the Education Advisory Board on July 28.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><strong>Peter Fox-Penner<\/strong> of the <strong>Institute for Sustainable Energy<\/strong> gave a presentation on climate change policy at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on August 2.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diane Baldwin<\/strong>\u00a0of<strong> Sponsored Programs<\/strong> and <strong>Gretchen Hartigan<\/strong> of <strong>Post Award Financial Operations<\/strong> took part in the annual meeting of the National Council of University Research Administrators on August 7 through 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kevin Outterson<\/strong> of the <strong>School of Law<\/strong> participated in the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress on September 8 and 9.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span><span>BUZZ BITS&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span>The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced last month\u00a0that Dr. Joshua Gordon will be the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/nih-names-dr-joshua-gordon-director-national-institute-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\">new director of the National Institute of Mental Health<\/a>. Gordon previously served as associate professor at Columbia University Medical Center.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>NIH also selected\u00a0Dr. Diana Bianchi as its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/nih-names-dr-diana-bianchi-director-national-institute-child-health-human-development\" target=\"_blank\">new director of the National Institute of Child Health and\u00a0Human Development<\/a>. Dr. Bianchi is currently vice chair for pediatric research at Tufts Medical Center.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The Government Accountability Office released the latest in a series of federal reports on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/GAO-16-573\" target=\"_blank\">regulatory burden within\u00a0the federal research enterprise<\/a>, recommending federal agencies further standardize forms and postpone some pre-award paperwork until after receipt of a federal grant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The Obama Administration held a webinar with details about the forthcoming five-year research plan for\u00a0the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iarpccollaborations.org\/news\/5924\" target=\"_blank\">Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee<\/a>\u00a0<span>and the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/blog\/2016\/05\/13\/white-house-arctic-science-ministerial-september-28-2016\" target=\"_blank\">White House Arctic Science Ministerial<\/a><span> scheduled for September 28.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span><span>NSF REQUESTS INPUT ON STRATEGIC PLAN<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The National Science Foundation (NSF) is soliciting comments as it begins to develop its next strategic plan, which will lay out the agency&#8217;s vision and priorities for 2018 through 2022. NSF is interested in hearing from the scientific community on a range of issues, including areas to build upon from the current strategic plan and how to approach the agency&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/about\/congress\/reports\/nsf_big_ideas.pdf?dm_i=1ZJN,4FGWL,E29O0Q,GB891,1\" target=\"_blank\">ten &#8220;big ideas&#8221;<\/a> for investment. NSF will be accepting feedback through September 27, with the goal of making the first draft of the plan public in May 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/od\/oia\/strategicplan\/feedback.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Submit feedback<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span><span>GRANTS NEWS YOU CAN USE<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The National Science Foundation announced that it welcomes proposals for fundamental research that utilizes Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones. The agency&#8217;s directorates for Engineering and for Computer and Information Science and Engineering will support drone proposals through their existing grant programs.
