Trump <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=ae65281a6f&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=ae65281a6f&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" data-outlook-id=\"2a517d97-a6af-49ba-b751-d82503ee0337\" rel=\"noopener\">signed into law the spending bills that fund research activities<\/a> <\/strong>at the\u00a0National Science Foundation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Department of Energy, and National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities for fiscal year 2026. The new law rejects the Trump Administration&#8217;s proposed spending cuts for these agencies, maintaining\u00a0their budgets at a similar level to last year.<\/li>\n<li>The Department of Education (ED) announced this week that it has initiated the process to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=752969d986&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=752969d986&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" data-outlook-id=\"ebfcd9a2-5c05-4161-8dc2-b80dfcc78d24\" rel=\"noopener\">update the federal rules governing higher education accreditation<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0through\u00a0a negotiated rulemaking that will include an opportunity for public comment. ED&#8217;s goals are to\u00a0&#8220;simplify\u00a0the Secretary\u2019s recognition of emerging and existing accreditors; examine the extent to which accreditation contributes to rising higher education costs and credential inflation; safeguard against undue influence from related private trade associations; [and] eliminate standards or policies that discriminate on the basis of immutable characteristics.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>ED is inviting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=b710bdd6c7&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=b710bdd6c7&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" data-outlook-id=\"08993b64-5854-4be2-8f5b-27ccdbc6b54d\" rel=\"noopener\">public comment on a proposal to restrict federal student aid options for certain degree programs<\/a><\/strong> following the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which set\u00a0maximum loan limits at $20,500 a year for graduate students and $50,000 a year for professional students. The proposal\u00a0includes a new and narrow\u00a0definition of\u00a0&#8220;professional degree&#8221; program that only covers 11 fields of study. Comments are due within 30 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>EVENT NEWS YOU CAN USE<\/h3>\n<p>On Wednesday, February 11th, the Office of Research will convene &#8220;Research on Tap: On Language and Being Human&#8221; at 4:00pm in the Kilachand Center Colloquium Room. The event, co-hosted by Wheelock College of Education &amp; Human Development Professors Naomi Caselli and Christina Dobbs, will\u00a0bring together BU faculty from across the university to explore how language influences how we communicate, learn, connect, advocate, and find meaning. &#8220;Research on Tap&#8221; events feature 10-12 BU scholars presenting a maximum of four slides and delivering a four-minute \u201celevator pitch\u201d of their work, followed by refreshments and lively discussion that enable investigators to meet potential research collaborators.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=cd3df9a846&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=cd3df9a846&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" data-outlook-id=\"84e27d15-3022-468b-a4d9-4436942de304\" rel=\"noopener\">RSVP\u00a0today<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>GRANT NEWS YOU CAN USE<\/h3>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) recently released the annual\u00a0<\/span><strong><u><a data-outlook-id=\"6444cf90-f0ce-4976-9b4b-0aa6b93ef1b6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=6fac5756e3&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" title=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=6fac5756e3&amp;e=4a051cec5e\">AFRI Education and Workforce Development (EWD) program<\/a><\/u><\/strong><span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>solicitation. The program supports training opportunities for all levels of students and educators, from K-12 to postdoctoral scholars. A new Program Area Priority called the &#8220;Education and Workforce Development Workshop Grants\u201d is available this year.
