Brown<\/strong><span>\u00a0attended the fall membership meeting of the Association of American Universities between October 24th and 26th.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Segr\u00e8<\/strong> of the <strong>College of Arts &amp; Sciences<\/strong> and the <strong>College of Engineering<\/strong> gave a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/science.osti.gov\/ber\/berac\/Meetings\/202110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">talk<\/a><\/strong> at a meeting of the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s Biological and Environmental Research Advisory Committee, of which he is a member, on October 22nd.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>BUZZ BITS&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>On Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Kathi Vidal as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/10\/26\/president-biden-announces-key-nominations-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office<\/a><\/strong>. Vidal is a long-time patent lawyer who has worked to diversify technology and legal professions.<\/li>\n<li>President Biden also\u00a0announced his intent to nominate Gigi Sohn (COM &#8217;83) as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/10\/26\/president-biden-announces-key-nominations-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission<\/a><\/strong> (FCC), which regulates telecommunications. If confirmed, Sohn would be the first openly LGBTQ commissioner in FCC\u00a0history.<\/li>\n<li>The National Institutes of Health announced Dr. Dorit Zuk will be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nigms.nih.gov\/News\/results\/Pages\/10-18-2021.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deputy director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(NIGMS).
