Biden announced his intent to nominate former U.S. Senator Bill Nelson as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=64ea4c78ec&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)<\/strong><\/a>. Nelson is a former astronaut who represented Florida in the Senate for 14 years.<\/li>\n<li>The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced last week that Dr. Jane Lubchenco will serve as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=6acdc73b72&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>deputy director of climate &amp; environment<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Lubchenco is a marine biologist who served as the administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration during the Obama administration.<\/li>\n<li>Stefanie Tompkins became the new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=6944e3d7d2&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)<\/a><\/strong> last week. Tompkins is a former\u00a0U.S. Army intelligence officer who previously worked at DARPA for more than a decade, including a stint as the agency&#8217;s acting director in 2017.<\/li>\n<li><span>Former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was confirmed as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=5b5c52e8ec&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Secretary of Labor<\/a><\/strong> (DOL) by a 68 to 29 vote of the U.S. Senate on Monday. Walsh is the first former union president to lead the agency since 1977.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>GRANTS NEWS YOU CAN USE<\/h3>\n<p>The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released the 2021 Convergence Accelerator solicitation for projects that seek \u201cto transition basic research and discovery into practice\u2014to solve high-impact societal challenges aligned with specific research themes (tracks).\u201d\u00a0 NSF is inviting proposals for two new tracks: Networked Blue Economy and Trust and Authenticity in Communications Systems.\u00a0Letters of Intent for Phase I proposals are required and due by\u00a0May 5th,\u00a0and full proposals due by\u00a0June 14th.\u00a0Only Phase I awardees are eligible to submit to Phase II, with those proposals due by May 25, 2022.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bbb26aa6a2e1474a7442d71c6&amp;id=39b8b741be&amp;e=4a051cec5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Find out more<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>EVENTS NEWS YOU CAN USE<\/h3>\n<p>The Office of Research and Foundation Relations are cohosting a workshop on April 7th to acquaint social scientists at BU with the Russell Sage Foundation&#8217;s (RSF) mission, funding priorities, and grant application protocols. RSF dedicates itself to strengthening the methods, data, and theoretical core of the social sciences to better understand societal problems and develop informed responses.
