PRESIDENT BROWN MEETS WITH PRESS, POLICYMAKERS

President Robert A. Brown visited Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to discuss BU’s research and college affordability initiatives with press outlets and members of Congress. Brown highlighted the University’s interdisciplinary research and new general education program with the Washington Post and Chronicle of Higher Education. He discussed BU’s commitment to financial aid and efforts to prepare students for a changing workforce with Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC).

BUZZ BITS….

  • On Thursday, the House Ways and Means Committee approved the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which universities oppose due to its elimination of important tax benefits for students and nonprofit organizations. Senate Republicans released their own version of the bill that does not include removal of the student benefits, but does include a similar excise tax on certain university endowments. The bills are expected to evolve as they move quickly through the legislative process, and BU Federal Relations continues to discuss the University’s concerns with policymakers.
  • The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on anti-Semitism on college campuses on Tuesday. Panelists focused on whether the U.S. Department of Education should alter its definition of anti-Semitism to encompass anti-Israel conduct.
  • Sam Clovis withdrew his nomination for chief scientist of the U.S. Department of Agriculture after questions regarding his qualifications.
