Case Presentation, Part II

a. Prevalence of herbal medicine use

Since you have known her for a long time, you have had a strong patient-provider relationship with Mrs. Nguyen. You talk to her about the diagnosis of acute hepatitis and begin to review all the possible causes with her.

Before you can move forward in your discussion, Mrs. Nguyen pulls out a bag of Vietnamese herbal supplements.  She begins to talk about wanting to control her diabetes and high cholesterol and starting a daily routine on teas and herbal products that were recommended by her sister-in-law back in Vietnam.

Mrs. Nguyen continues to tell you that she bought all her herbal supplements at the Vietnamese grocery store down the street from the community health center (where you are at). She went shopping and found them on the shelves. Please see the pictures, below, for a glimpse into a Vietnamese pharmacy and grocery store.
