Over the past year, I have been working to more explicitly address racism in my teaching. This has included a training for other faculty on addressing racial micro-aggressions in the classroom, incorporating explicit expectations about health disparities during orientations for the BU School of Public Health, and creating more specific space in the classroom to address race and racism. Students report seeking out opportunities to speak and learn more about race and racism. In this Teaching Talk, I will present three approaches I have tried over the past year to more effectively address race and racism in teaching. These ideas will hopefully be useful for other faculty as they consider their own journey.
