Traditional, one-size-fits-all teaching often marginalizes students who do not match assumed norms. Inclusive practices work by combining transparent course design, varied modes of engagement, and relationship-centered teaching that builds trust and belonging (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1187\/cbe.19-01-0021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dewsbury &amp; Brame, 2019<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/What-Inclusive-Instructors-Do-Principles-and-Practices-for-Excellence-in\/Addy-Dube-Mitchell-SoRelle\/p\/book\/9781642671933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Addy et al., 2021<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>While there are many definitions and ways to think about inclusive teaching, it is framed as a reflective, evidence-based practice rather than a set of isolated techniques. As a mechanism, inclusive teaching promotes educational equity and deeper disciplinary learning.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"educational-benefits\" styles=\"text-align: center;\">Educational Benefits<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stronger sense of belonging<\/strong>: When students feel seen and valued, they participate more, take risks, and stay engaged (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1187\/cbe.24-07-0179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clements et al., 2020<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>More equitable learning outcomes<\/strong>: Inclusive strategies clarify expectations, permit multiple ways to show understanding, help close gaps tied to prior preparation or identity (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1187\/cbe.19-01-0021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dewsbury &amp; Brame, 2019<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11422-018-9891-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dewsbury, 2020<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deeper engagement<\/strong>: When students see their perspectives represented and have varied ways to interact with content, they engage more meaningfully in richer discussions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/What-Inclusive-Instructors-Do-Principles-and-Practices-for-Excellence-in\/Addy-Dube-Mitchell-SoRelle\/p\/book\/9781642671933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Addy et al., 2021<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.58680\/ce202030758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zdenek, 2015<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved collaboration and classroom climate<\/strong>: Inclusive team structures and universally designed assignments help students work together more effectively and reduce interpersonal frictions (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1061\/JCEECD.EIENG-2067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vaden et al., 2025<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"in-practice\">In Practice<\/h2>\n<p>See how BU professors and instructors are incorporating exam wrappers in their courses!<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lci-examples\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Boston University Large Course Initiative Examples<\/h3>\n<p>In collaboration with several programs in BU\u2019s College of Arts and Sciences, the Institute is engaged in a multi-year initiative to redesign the student experience in large classes that typically have 100 or more students. This platform integrates shorter, more targeted readings while consolidating homework, knowledge checks, and polling all in one platform.<\/p>\n<p>They have also designed and integrated a number of small group discussions and case study activities, with LA support, into their large lecture sections.<\/p>\n<p>During Fall 2025, they also piloted LAUNCH sessions with students (Learn, Ask, Understand, Network, Connect, Help). These involved scheduling small group meetings with student tutors during the first 3 weeks in class so that students could get to know their peers and their tutors better outside of lecture. After these initial meetings, students were more engaged in class, more likely to ask their tutors questions, and more likely to schedule meetings for help.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">General Chemistry 1<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Instruction Team:<\/strong> Binyomin Abrams, Keying Chen, Caroline Muteti<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity: Instructor training program, weekly knowledge checks, and scientist spotlight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Chemistry, the team created a redesigned instructor training program for teaching fellows and learning assistants. Weekly training includes explicit discussions of culturally responsive pedagogy and student-centered teaching, helping instructors recognize student diversity, anticipate varied learning needs, and creating more welcoming discussion sections. These sessions also introduce core frameworks for backward design, Universal Design for Learning, and reflective teaching that guide instructors in planning activities, framing questions, and supporting students with different levels of prior preparation.<\/p>\n<p>This course also uses short, multimodal knowledge-check videos to help students preview concepts before class, giving them multiple pathways to access ideas at their own pace. \u201cScientist Spotlights\u201d each week highlight chemistry and molecular science done by a diverse group of talented scientists.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Basic Statistics and Probability &amp; Applied Statistics<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Instruction Team:<\/strong> Emily Stephen, Jonathan Huggins, Yongho Lim<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity: Tech enabled strategies and standard-based grading <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The math team employs a variety of technology-enabled strategies, like skeletal outlines, interactive in-class activities, and post-lecture problem sets to provide students with multiple ways to engage and practice.<\/p>\n<p>In the lab, the shift from JMP to R reduces costs and builds real-world relevance, supported by undergraduate Learning Assistants who offer peer-level guidance. Redesigned lab activities are more structured and contextualized, helping students connect statistical ideas to authentic problems.<\/p>\n<p>The move to standards-based grading further reinforces equity by offering clear expectations and multiple chances to demonstrate learning. The feedback is focused on growth rather than points.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3 id=\"additional-examples\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Additional BU Inclusive Teaching Strategies Examples<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mymedia.bu.edu\/media\/t\/1_nryfpu84\/-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Design Inclusive Syllabi<\/strong><\/a>: In this lightning talk, <strong>Yvette Cozier, DSc, MPH<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) at the BU School of Public Health, asks participants if their syllabus is WEIRD, i.e., designed for Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic contexts, which narrowly defines and measures competency. Cozier further inquires: Is there a \u201csilent curriculum\u201d at work? Who is included? Who is excluded?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mymedia.bu.edu\/media\/t\/1_vcac1qnz\"><strong>Leverage Inclusive Assessments<\/strong><\/a>: In this lightning talk, <strong>Leslie Dietiker<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education and Teaching &amp; Learning in the Wheelock College of Education &amp; Human Development, <span>explores proactive approaches to the design of inclusive assessments<\/span>. In addition to its humanizing approach, Dietiker also describes how inclusive assessment is multi-tiered in the ways it offers both accessibility and depth (low-floor\/high ceiling) and triangulates learning with no single mode for assessment.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/excellence\/files\/2025\/06\/Lauren_ONeal_Inclusive-Poster_2025.jpg\">Build Inclusive Relationships<\/a>: Lauren O\u2019Neal<\/strong> with the Metropolitan College Graduate Program in Arts Administration reimagines inclusive pedagogy as multidirectional and non-hierarchical, operating in three strands: between teacher and students, between students and their peers, and between students and the curriculum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"technology\">Supporting Technology<\/h2>\n<p>Inclusive teaching strategies can be administered in a variety of formats. Often, they have more to do with assignment design or classroom management\/facilitation, but some can be facilitated through the use of technology.
