{"id":13738,"date":"2026-05-05T09:19:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T13:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/excellence\/?post_type=resources&#038;p=13738"},"modified":"2026-09-01T17:30:44","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T21:30:44","slug":"active-learning","status":"publish","type":"resources","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/excellence\/resources\/active-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Active Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How can faculty inspire students to take a more central role in their learning? <strong>Active learning<\/strong> is a term used to describe instructional strategies that promote students&#8217; active participation in knowledge construction processes (<a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=ED336049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bonwell &amp; Eisen 1991<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/00219266.2026.2628790\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince 2004<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Such strategies may include hands-on activities, brief writing and discussion assignments, problem solving tasks, information gathering and synthesis, question generation, and reflection-based activities, among others. Together, these approaches seek to engage learners&#8217; higher order thinking skills through the production and articulation of knowledge, as opposed to through the passive transmission of facts and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Active learning tasks are designed to tease out learners&#8217; current understanding, make that understanding explicit, and then create opportunities for learners to integrate new knowledge into their understanding.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"educational-benefits\">Educational Benefits<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Active learning benefits all students, but offers disproportionate benefits for individuals from underrepresented groups (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.191690311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Theobald et al., 2020<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Active learning contributes to higher exam scores and pass rates across STEM fields (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.33043\/TH.48.1.26-35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freeman et al., 2014<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Interactive courses are more effective in promoting conceptual understanding compared to traditional ones (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1021\/bk-2022-1409.ch001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hake, 1998<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite the above research, some students perceive that they learn less in active learning environments, but effective framing, open conversation, and effective facilitation of activities by the instructor can help counter this misconception (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.182193611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deslauriers et al. 2019<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s40594-018-0102-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tharayil et al., 2018<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"in-practice\">In Practice<\/h2>\n<p>See how BU professors and instructors are incorporating active learning in their courses!<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lci-examples\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Boston University Large Course Initiative Examples<\/h3>\n<p>In collaboration with several programs in BU\u2019s College of Arts and Sciences, the Institute is engaged in a multi-year initiative to redesign the student experience in large classes that typically have 100 or more students. These practice questions, quick polls, and small group discussion topics are designed to encourage students to engage more deeply with reading and lecture content. Case study activities help students apply their theoretical knowledge to real world examples and applications.<\/p>\n<p>They have also encouraged students to actively evaluate their learning with quiz RECAP (Review, Evaluate, Correct, Analyze, Plan) sessions\u2014where students reflect on their learning and study strategies along with their responses to quiz questions.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">General Chemistry 1<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Instruction Team:<\/strong> Binyomin Abrams, Keying Chen, Caroline Muteti<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity:<\/strong> polling and knowledge checks, think-pair-share, scientist spotlight case studies, discussion-based activities, Wiki-style Q&amp;A platform<\/p>\n<p>The Chemistry team has been using in-class polling for years, but they have continued to develop more in-class questions and knowledge checks designed to have student think more deeply about their chemistry learning. They have deployed a number of different active learning opportunities for students, such as think-pair-share, small group discussions, and case study\/scientist spotlight group worksheets. The case study and scientist spotlight worksheets have been developed to link core concepts to real-world applications and scientists and help students practice and understand the relevance of the concepts and procedures learning in homework, lecture, and lab.<\/p>\n<p>They also deploy a wiki-style Q&amp;A and discussion board platform (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/lms\/blackboard\/piazza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piazza<\/a>) where students can edit collaboratively to answer questions from their peers. This moved some discussion away from just posting a comment or reply for participation credit and instead encourages students to problem solve together to assist their peers.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Basic Statistics and Probability &amp; Applied Statistics<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Instruction Team:<\/strong> Emily Stephen, Jonathan Huggins, Yongho Lim<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity:<\/strong> Quizzes, labs, and mini projects<\/p>\n<p>he Math team has integrated in-class polling, small group discussions, and think-pair-share coding activities into their courses. These all are designed to have students practice, critically evaluate, and create their own code using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/research\/software-and-programming\/common-languages\/r-basics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R<\/a> for statistical analysis.<\/p>\n<p>In labs, Learning Assistants helped facilitate more active learning opportunities including small group discussions, coding case studies\/worksheets, and peer assessment.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3 id=\"bu-examples\" style=\"text-align: center;\">BU Active Learning Examples<\/h3>\n<p>These select BU examples show how active learning can work in a variety of educational contexts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mymedia.bu.edu\/media\/t\/1_645lb6rt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Active Learning in Large Classrooms. <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/biology\/people\/profiles\/elizabeth-co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liz Co<\/a>, Senior Lecturer of Biology in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences, integrates active learning via case studies in her biology classes to better engage students after realizing they struggled with critical thinking exam questions compared to memorization questions.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2023\/bu-teaching-awards-honor-two-outstanding-educators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong> \u201cBU Teaching Awards Honor Two Outstanding Educators.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/profiles\/renato-mancuso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renato Mancuso<\/a>, Associate Professor of Computer Science in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences, received the 2023 Gerald and Deanne Gitner Family Award for Innovation in Teaching with Technology for the development and deployment of CodeBuddy in their Fundamentals of Computing Systems course.
