{"id":341,"date":"2012-02-06T16:05:31","date_gmt":"2012-02-06T21:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/exafmm\/?p=341"},"modified":"2012-08-16T10:25:29","modified_gmt":"2012-08-16T14:25:29","slug":"research-seed-grant-from-mghpcc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/exafmm\/2012\/02\/06\/research-seed-grant-from-mghpcc\/","title":{"rendered":"Research seed grant from MGHPCC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prof. Barba led a multi-institution bid to success in the call for research seed grants of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mghpcc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Massachusetts Green High-Performance Computing Center, MGHPCC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The project is a collaboration among investigators in BU, Harvard and UMass aimed at creating an open and high-performance software infrastructure for \u00a0hierarchical N-body algorithms.\u00a0The award amounts to $130,487 for the duration of one year, and will fund a graduate student in each institution to develop extensions to the ExaFMM code base, and a workshop to exchange ideas with other researchers in the field.<\/p>\n<p>The team funded by this seed grant will develop capability to solve diverse problems, including biophysics, acoustics and fluid dynamics.\u00a0The joint effort will build from the software framework in ExaFMM, which was <a title=\"Poster at the NVIDIA exhibition booth in SC\u201911\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/exafmm\/2012\/01\/04\/poster-at-the-nvidia-exhibition-booth-in-sc11\/\">released by Barba\u2019s team at the Supercomputing Conference<\/a> in Seattle, Nov. 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The research team is formed by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/me\/people\/faculty\/ae\/barba\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lorena Barba<\/a><\/strong>, Boston University<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seas.harvard.edu\/directory\/ccecka\" target=\"_blank\">Cris Cecka<\/a><\/strong>, Institute for Applied Computational Science, Harvard University<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.umass.edu\/Directory\/personal.html?email=johnston\" target=\"_blank\">Hans Johnston<\/a><\/strong>, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Massachusetts Amherst<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, <strong>IBM T.J. Watson Research<\/strong> (Cambridge, MA) is an industrial partner in this effort, and <strong>Dr Rio Yokota<\/strong> (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) is an external collaborator. Yokota was a postdoctoral researcher with Prof Barba for nearly three years, during which time he developed the ExaFMM code.
