One of the foremost contemporary novelists and poets of Romania\u2019s 1970s \u201cBlue Jeans Generation,\u201d his work was always strongly influenced by American writing in opposition to the official communist ideology. C\u0103rt\u0103rescu\u2019s literary achievements have been recognized both nationally and internationally. He is the winner of the Romanian Writers\u2019 Union Prize, the Romanian Academy\u2019s Prize, and the 1992 nominee for the Prix M\u00e8dicis, among other awards. He recently won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/romanian-writer-mircea-cartarescu-gets-spycher-literaturpreis-leuk-prize-and-right-to-stay-in-swiss-castle-two-months-a-year\/103176\/\">Spycher \u2013 Literaturpreis Leuk<\/a> prize in Switzerland, one of the most important literary prizes in Europe. His previous novel\u00a0<em>Nostalgia<\/em> was published by New Directions. He currently lives in Bucharest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Delia Ungureanu<\/strong> received her PhD from the University of Bucharest in 2011. She is the author of <em>Poetica Apocalipsei. Razboiul cultural in revistele literare romanesti<\/em> <em>(1944\u20131947)<\/em> [<em>The Poetics of the Apocalypse: The Cultural War in Romanian Literary Magazines (1944\u20131947)<\/em>, Bucharest University Press, 2012] and essays on canon formation and on modern poetry and poetics. She is currently working on a book project on oneiric literature as world literature, with a focus on world literary market strategies for going global for peripheral authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Fernando Pessoa, Orhan Pamuk, Milorad Pavi\u0107, and Mircea C\u0103rt\u0103rescu. This project will take Pierre Bourdieu\u2019s theory of the national literary field onto an international level, following new concepts and theoretical approaches explored by scholars like Pascale Casanova and Giselle Sapiro.<\/p>\n<p><em>This event takes place as part of our European Voices series\u2014an ongoing series of conversations with artists and writers, activists and intellectuals exploring questions at the intersection of politics and culture.
