Social Resistance in Times of Austerity: A Panel Discussion with Kostis Kornetis and Alex Khasnabish

Kostis Kornetis is Assistant Professor at the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies at New York University and author of Children of the Dictatorship: Student Resistance, Cultural Politics and the Long 1960s in Greece (Berghan Books, 2013). A historian of European authoritarian regimes and social movements in the 20th century, Kostis will discuss social resistance in Europe in particular in response to austerity policies.

Alex Khasnabish is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His current research explores the connection between the radical imagination and radical social transformation amongst collectives of activists in Halifax. He is the author of Zapatistas: Rebellion from the Grassroots to the Global (2010, Zed Books) and Zapatismo Beyond Borders: New Imaginations of Political Possibility (U of T Press, 2008) as well as several articles and book chapters about contemporary radical politics, social movements, and globalization. Alex will discuss social movements in response to the economic crisis on this side of the Atlantic.
