Event Highlights: Recent Trends in EU State Aid Law—From Crisis Management to Global Regulation?

This talk, by Dr. Juan Jorge Piernas López, Jean Monnet Chair holder and Tenured Professor of European Union Law and Public International Law at the University of Murcia (Spain), took place on Tuesday, December 6, 2023. Dr. Piernas López discusses the history of state aid rules dating back to the the Treaty of Rome and their role in maintaining economic, social, and territorial cohesion. He runs through some of the political and economical events that have affected State aid policy in the EU and how to balance member states’ interests in a global market.

Dr. Juan Jorge Piernas López is an international consultant on European Union State aid law and policy for the World Bank, for several governments and, more recently, for the ENI CBC Med Program, funded by the European Neighbourhood Instrument. He has published extensively on European Union Law, notably the book of The Concept of State Aid under EU Law From internal market to competition and beyond, published by Oxford University Press (Oxford Studies in European Law) in 2015. In 2021, he co-edited the Research Handbook on European State Aid Law (2nd edition) and published a case-note in the journal Common Market Law Review. His publications have been cited 6 times by three Advocate Generals of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
